A Mind-bending journey featuring exquisitely presented logic and philosophy

"The Art of Knowing" by Mr. Langan is far more than a guide to learning techniques. The author directly examines the issue of determinism vs. free will, a long standing question, in an intriguing way. Free will connects with the challenge of understanding the Mind, and Mr. Langan is keen to argue that modern science is not complete without a fully developed concept of Mind.
As for Mind and a grand theory of its workings, this has also intrigued Freeman Dyson. He has an extended discussion of Mind in several of his 1970s and 1980s books. Mr. Langan's Cognitive-Theoretic Model of the Universe (CTMU) may have some features in common with Dyson's views about Mind, which would be saying a lot, given Dyson's stellar accomplishments. Though Dyson's artistic and literary writings are on the edge of conventional science, a recent biography about him by Schewe shows how close Dyson was to a Nobel Prize, among the many other intriguing and advanced aspects of his long life, research, and writing.
On the other hand, some scientists have said that complex living beings can never fully understand the workings of their mind or Mind in the abstract. In this case, Langan's goal for complete understanding of consciousness would be a bridge too far. Yet other books, including "How Math Explains the World" by Prof. James D. Stein, demonstrate that working on an impossible problem can -- and often does -- yield valuable results in other areas. Even if the challenge is ultimately impossible, it is still worth taking on.
In addition, Mr. Langan's pursuit of a theory of Mind that would be part of science may be related to the Anthropic Principle, even though the author probably goes further in his claims than the Anthropic Principle when he invokes theology. An extended and well-credentialed exploration of the Anthropic Principle can be found in "The Anthropic Cosmological Principle" by John D. Barrow, Frank J. Tipler, and John A. Wheeler. From the Amazon publisher's introduction, I quote: "this collection of ideas holds that the existence of intelligent observers determines the fundamental structure of the Universe. In its most radical version, the Anthropic Principle asserts that "intelligent information-processing must come into existence in the Universe, and once it comes into existence, it will never die out." "
I enjoyed the creative approach that Langan applies to each chapter / challenge. From free will to ethics to applied ethics in politics and the biosphere, to clash of civilizations discussions and the need for tolerance, this book has an incredible scope. I will be looking forward to new books from Langan.

This is a must have for anyone interested in Philosophy of mind, free will and causality and the deep nature of the reality we inhabit. A breath of fresh air indeed.
