About the Author
After the first book appeared in 1880, Joel Chandler Harris was deluged with letters from readers all over the country asking for more stories of Brer Rabbit and his friends--so for the remaining years of his life he collected and wrote them. Richard Chase, noted folklorist and author of Jack Tales and Grandfather Tales, compiled and edited the volume after Harris s death, and his occasional footnotes and word definitions contribute to our understanding of the dialect. Chase s belief in the importance of folktales and Harris s work is summed up in his foreword: "These tales grew up in the soil of our nation. They came from the soul of a people. They endure."

Try to view this from a historical perspective, relative to the times, locale and culture. It is narrow minded to lift this work from its own time and "transplant" it into today's culture.'
Maybe if you read this with more of an open mind and attempted to transpose yourself into the culture of the book's time ( rather than vice versa) you might see more value whether as a positive or negative example.
Children from any locale can benefit if a work helps them to be more open minded and hopefully understand the REASON why they need to be more sensitive and questioning.

Back to the days of minstrel shows and blackface...but without any context

This is one of the many books, such as "Little Black Sambo" that many (white) adults have fond memories of, and most black people find deeply offensive. While many might feel that the characters could "be of any race" and that "it teaches children important lessons" and the the story is "beautiful and touching," I feel that it does perpetuate racism and stereotypes -- both overtly and in more subtle ways.
"Dar wuz dis sum pepuz who wuz settin, an dey wuz axin bawt dis mawnin, low dat dey waz tard. Dey kep runnin way fer ter fer home, sot dar wunner nudder, an de wuz gwine fas. Twel bimeby wuz atter fer ter ketch, bless grashus, hit wuz down ter dis day, an duh bimeby dey, gwineter git fer ter tell, deze yer, dish yer, an fer ter git, dey wuz dere an gun ter."
What important lesson does this teach young children? How could this apply to upper-middle income children in Marin, Westchester, or Cook Counties?
