Kelly did it again....

I fell in love with yet another of Kelly's books!! I think she did a great job on this book, for an author to keep a story going with so many characters and be able to continually make the story flow and be interesting is a true talent... I love reading her books and really am falling in love with this couple as I have the last 2... of course she left us wanting more as usual and I will patiently wait for book 15 in February....

About the Author
James Beattie has had a long interest in heart failure. He was Clinical Lecturer in Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Birmingham and was appointed Consultant Cardiologist at Heartlands Hospital in 1990. For about 15 years he has had an interest in palliative care for heart failure and for
the past 3 years has been a National Clinical Lead for the NHS Heart Improvement Programme promoting the development of such services across England. He is a member of the Circulatory Forum of the National Council for Palliative Care and the Department of Health End of Life Care Strategy Group. He
is also a member of the British Cardiovascular Society and holds fellowships of the European Society of Cardiology and the Royal Colleges of Physicians of Glasgow and London. Sarah Goodlin is a geriatrician and palliative care physician in Salt Lake City. Dr Goodlin developed the New Hampshire End
of Life Project, a two-year project that initiated a state-wide collaborative to improve end of life care and developed outcome measures for care of persons near the end of life. In 1998 she initiated quality improvement projects for care of the frail elderly and for persons with advanced heart
failure. In 2002 and 2003 Dr Goodlin directed two consensus conferences on Palliative and Supportive Care in Advanced Heart Failure, funded by the Agency for Healthcare Quality and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. She directs the Palliative Care-Heart Failure Education and Research Collaborative,
a national working group of researchers and clinicians formed to improve quality of life and meet the needs of patients with advanced heart failure and their families. Dr Goodlin was also a member ofthe Board of Directors of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

About the Author

Vicky Goosey-Tolfrey, PhD,is a senior lecturer in exercise physiology and director of the Peter Harrison Centre for Disability Sport at LoughboroughUniversity in Leicestershire, UK. Her work in 1994 with Prof. Ian Campbell and Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson sparked her interest in disability sport, and she went on to earn her PhD in sport science from ManchesterMetropolitanUniversity five years later.

 

Dr. Goosey-Tolfrey attended the Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games with the Great Britain wheelchair racing and wheelchair basketball teams, respectively, and was the lead physiology consultant for the British Paralympic Association for the Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Games. In her leisure time, she enjoys being with her family, golfing, and watching films.

I really like the detail that is in this book for each type of wheelchair sport covered. I just wish that some parts of it could have been more clear. I am glad to have it to refer to as I work toward being an elite wheelchair athlete.

Forget the MBA -- Get This Book

This book is less an autobiography than an education in business and economics with a unique philosophy. It is a great mirror to hold up to our current business practices and economic life. Reading between the lines, it is a warning to the leveraged buyout crowd and an incentive to our economic policy makers to think again.

Henry Ford has been much ridiculed and vilified. True, he was critical of much and expressed himself very strongly. He was anti-Semitic. This was not unusual in his day. This book has none of that, but you can see one source of his enmity – the banks. Then, as now, the Jewish participation in commercial and investment banks was very pronounced. Ford felt that allowing bankers in led to a loss of control and running a business in a way far different from his philosophy. He was not very positive about lawyers either.

Henry Ford is also admired for the “assembly line” system of manufacturing, which he admits he got from observing a slaughterhouse operation. Ford is also known for going a long time without changing models and lowering his prices (along what we now call the learning curve). He looked for constant manufacturing and engineering improvement (what the Japanese call “kaizen”). Also, like the Japanese in later generations, he pioneered “just in time” inventories.

His goal was to supply simple high quality products at prices anyone could afford. Meanwhile, he raised the average worker’s wages to unprecedented heights and instituted companywide “social services” and a unique brand of vocational education for the young. In many ways he was neither a capitalist nor conservative. Rather he was a progressive thinker for his time and a “distributivist” rather than a socialist. One might wonder whether his philosophy, if generally implemented, would have prevented the slew of economic and industrial problems experienced since the 1930s, but it certainly justifies listening to his views and considering them seriously.

Autobiography is not missing here. I enjoyed Ford’s description of his friendships with Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone, and the naturalist John Burroughs. I recall being taught in school or elsewhere that Ford was a poor farm boy who became a mechanic and invented a car in his garage. This is misleading. His father was an affluent farmer who gave his son a nice farm eventually. Ford did not like farm work and always was looking for ways to do things efficiently. This led him to mechanics and he was not like your corner garage mechanic. He became interested in gasoline engines and perfecting them. He was more what we would call a machinist. Moreover, through self-study and practice he became what we would call an engineer. He held responsible management jobs with a steam tractor company and Detroit Edison. While doing these things he tinkered on his own time with his original automobiles. His forward thinking is illustrated by his thoughts on why corn should be used to make “tractor fuel.” Sounds pretty modern to the ethanol crowd.

My only problem with this book is that the paragraphs are too darn long, but that's the way folks used to write.

I came away from this book with a renewed interest in Ford, a fascinating personality. His thoughts and “credo” about business and society and the proper place of the industrialist are well worth knowing and considering. They are as relevant today as 100 years ago. If you are in business management there is even more to think about and compare with what is taught in today’s business schools. If you worry about a world awash in debt and influenced by “bankers” and leveraged buy-out artists this book will give you more food for thought.

Saved me from a Bad path

I come from a horrible background, my family has no moral structure, they're either on drugs or selling drugs.

My freshmen year of high school was really hard for me, my moms drug use escalated and I felt trapped. I was about to give up and go towards the bad stuff my family did/does. I just wanted to be accepted, I was too weird for the normal kids, but not hardcore enough the kids that let me hang with them.

I had no support, and I felt like I couldn't reach out, after a suicide attempt, I was put into a leadership class and the Curriculum was the Seven habits of highly effective teens

This book helped me:
Over come my family (I moved out when I was 16)
Get better grades (I went from a 1.6-3.8 in one year and graduated with a 2.5)
It helped strengthen my moral goals (and give me some also)
and It helped me take care of myself

I am now 19 a freshmen in college and working towards becoming an abnormal Child Psychologist.

A few good teachers and this book saved me from a life of crime and drugs.

I feel like there are a lot kids out there that need this book, and a few good teachers.

P.s. I still have my copy from my freshmen year, all beat up and highlighted and I re-read it every so often to remind myself of all the awesome stuff in there.

Teen Angst ?

At the ripe age of 23, I borrowed my 18 year old brother's copy of this book and was enthralled.I cant help but wonder what a difference this book would have made in my life if I had read it at age 14 and not ten years later. The layout of the book is fun and appeals to readers of any age. This makes it easier to read. One thing I have to say, is that this book is one of the most powerful positive thinking books on the market. Although it's aimed at teens, the values and tips can apply to anyone. I loved the little excercises which are still applicable. Sean's frankness on matters really inspired me. My favourite part of the book though is the real life stories he relates on how teenagers have overcome difficulties and still succeed in the end. A great read, highly recommended !

Love it or hate it... the choice is yours

After reading through the reviews on this website and others on different websites I've come to this conclusion- either people think that it was (1)a fantastic book which distilled sound advice and changed their lives for the better [5 stars] or, (2)a bunch of cliched, useless material exhorting teens to be mama's boy/ teacher's pet/ goody-two-shoes/ (name your case)[1 star]. If there are people out there who haven't read the book and are getting confused by all the conflicting, contradictory messages up on the web, I honestly don't blame them. Who wouldn't be?

I've read the book and all I can say is that the book does not deliver miracles from heaven that can brilliantly transform your life and make it oh-so-fabulous. It didn't promise that either, by the way.

What it does is to offer tried-and-tested, reliable advice, the kind that your mother or teacher would have given you. Call it rehashed common sense, but the cartoons and quotes make it easier to digest and not-so-painful to internalise. Yes it's naggy, yes it's authoritarian, yes it's condescending at some parts... I don't doubt that. The thing is that in the end, it's still well-intentioned, useful advice. It's perfectly okay to just pick out one chapter, or one quote etc. that means something to you and ditch the rest. Really. Or if you really think that none of it can help you in your life, then take it as a few hours of harmless entertainment, forget about the book and get on with your life. Case closed.
