Catharsis for an innocent abroad - 3-

I chose this book because it sounded like the adventures of an ornithologist in Morocco. (I'm interested in birds and love Morocco and the Magreb in general). Even with some interesting moments and a few characters of substance, "Laws of Migration" turns out to be much more a romance novel, with a focus on the discovery of new personal identity, sexual fulfillment, and a different professional direction--all thanks to a connection with a mysterious dark stranger.
It's not a badly written story--a thirty-something ornithologist takes off for a field trip to Morocco after being passed over for the directorship of a scientific institute. She encounters the usual tourist problems upon arrival in Tangier; flees to Marrakech and connects with a swashbuckling type who shows her the medina and throws in a lesson in tantric sex. More travel in country follows; the birding field trip fails to meet expectations and the heroine goes exploring on her own to find a very rare bird and perhaps more tantric sex (the woman is no fool).
OK, so the book's characters are pretty well developed and there is a credible evolution of the principal's personality, albeit with some serious bad judgement and hysteria here and there. What's lacking here, however, is much of a sense of the place. This is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world and the country boasts some of the most exotic cities on the planet, but those settings don't come across very clearly.
Romantic novels are far from my usual reading material, so I'm probably being overly critical of the book. One thing I can say with some certainty, don't buy this novel if you think it's about ornithology or Morocco. They are very much peripheral to the story.

Captivating a non-romance reader

I am an avid reader but not of the romance genre. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this extremely well written novel. The characters are interesting, well developed, and I found myself caring deeply for their stories. What I found to be most enticing about this book was the authenticity of the characters, their traits, their thoughts, and the story itself. Exquisite birding language is utilized throughout the book creating a tightly woven theme. Literally every page offers something interesting to learn about the characters, the culture, birds, etc. But most importantly, what a beautiful story.

Becoming Free As A Bird

Elize, a talented ornithologist, believes her life is truly for the birds. But when her plans for a well deserved promotion are thwarted in part by an unexpected betrayal, she is forced to take a serious look at the sad state of her existence. When the chance to take an unauthorized trip to Morocco to locate a legendary ibis, Elize decides she has nothing to lose. The journey quickly becomes more than a scientific quest. As Elize negotiates cultural and professional challenges, she is guided by the wisdom of the birds and the love of an attractive, enigmatic man.
I enjoyed this book. In less able hands, Elize's exploration could have been no more than self-absorbed drivel. As she learns to trust herself, the universe and other people, she grows personally and professionally. The ending was a bit of a surprise with a slightly chilling twist. Elize did not dissolve into a helpless female as she confronted the hurts and regrets of the past. She became stronger and took responsibility for her life, past, present and future. The author captures the exotic feel of the locale and the scientific information is not excessive. This is a good, solid read that successfully avoids the pitfalls of the genre. Recommended.
