Even Nora Roberts Can Have A Bad Day...........
By A Customer
I love Nora Roberts, but this book asked for too much suspension of belief. The young and lovely B.J. Clark is the manager of a historic inn in New England. The new owner, Taylor Reynolds, comes in with plans for renovation. Taylor and B.J. spend the entire book arguing, since B.J. is resistant to any change whatsoever in her beloved inn. Taylor is surely the most benevolent boss ever, since he tolerates B.J.'s attitude and doesn't suggest she seek alternate employment. After spending 200 pages arguing bitterly, they decide to get married. Good luck, you two.....
Excerpt from inside the book:
"When handsome new owner Taylor Reynolds brought a pocketful of renovation plans for B.J.'s beloved inn and a blueprint for her seduction, the course of true love did not look smooth!"

Chauvinist vs. Whiner - Ugh!
By L. Martin
FROM THIS DAY is the story of BJ Clark and has a weak premise to begin with and continues a downhill course. BJ is a manager of an old-fashioned country inn and stands up to the new owner, Taylor Richards. When she does, it's not one with respect and intelligent, but comes across like a spoiled child making demands and giving ultimatums. What I don't understand is why BJ thinks she can make demands on a new owner to the point of telling him what he will and will not change about the way the business is run. It's his business, not hers, and she can be replaced! I understand loving your job, but she definitely crosses the lines of propriety and doesn't have a real sense of her own job responsibilities.

This would be enough to throw the story off kilter, but Nora Roberts has other ideas. She creates a male character that is so power hungry and self centered that he makes demands as only a chauvinist can!

A woman with no spine who whines about proposed changes to the inn and an overbearing new owner that thinks his money is enough for him to control and order everyone - including during their non-working hours. This relationship reminds me of Archie and Edith Bunker, but it's not written to be funny like the sitcom was! It may have been more acceptable in the era in which it was written (late 70's early 80's) but I doubt it. It probably rankled even then!

1 Star is Kind
By Rearden0112
Let me preface by saying I thoroughly enjoy the majority of Nora Robert's books, specifically the more recent. Having said that, this book is an abomination. It is everything you do not want in a romance novel. I spent the entirety of the book vacillating from cringing to seething. Ms. Roberts does the entire female species an extreme disservice in allowing this book to be published. The "hero", heavy emphasis on the quotations, is a serious jerk. Many times in romance novels the hero is a difficult alpha male who is not pleasant to many of the characters. However, when it comes to his dealing with the heroine he is a gentleman to the nth degree. In this book, the "hero" seems to be pleasant to everyone but the heroine. I don't believe he utters a truly kind sentence to her in the entire book. He is either belittling her, accusing her of bad/childlike behavior, or telling her she has no choice in his taking her virginity (nice). All the while his hotel decorator treats the heroine horribly in the "hero's" presence and strongly comes onto him (Roberts strongly hints that the two have a sexual relationship), and the "hero" responds by telling the heroine that it is her job to be exceedingly nice to the decorator and that his relationship with the decorator is none of the heroine's business. Sounds like a real stand-up guy right?
Do yourself a favor and save yourself the time and money by giving this book a pass. Instead, read Roberts more recent books ( The Search, Catching Fire, or any of her trilogies). Better yet look to Karen Rose or Julie James for great romances.
I hope this review helps you. I always look at the readers' responses to a book before spending the time reading. Unfortunately, I didn't heed their warnings for this one. I hope that you will do better that I.
