As Christians, in this present church age, Jesus says He wants to "sup" with us; in other words sit down with us at the dinner table. That is a major problem we Christians and churches have. He has the cure and tells us that in Rev. 3:20 in the Bible.
Jesus Adrian Romero writes and provokes one to think about how that may be done. It made me think corporately and personally about this desire Jesus wants for us, and with us as His church. Definitely a good, practical and thought provoking read.

About the Author
William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, on England s Avon River. When he was eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway. The couple had three children an older daughter Susanna and twins, Judith and Hamnet. Hamnet, Shakespeare s only son, died in childhood. The bulk of Shakespeare s working life was spent in the theater world of London, where he established himself professionally by the early 1590s. He enjoyed success not only as a playwright and poet, but also as an actor and shareholder in an acting company. Although some think that sometime between 1610 and 1613 Shakespeare retired from the theater and returned home to Stratford, where he died in 1616, others believe that he may have continued to work in London until close to his death.

A helpful addition

I started using Maxnotes as a beginning teacher, a few years back, so that I could catch up on some novels that I had never read in college. I was under the gun and had to provide lesson plans in 3 days on 5 novels I didn't know. Maxnotes saved me.
Now, some time later, I find myself referring back to those books and buying more of them. Am I still under the gun? No. These books, unlike like those charming ones from my college days, are well organized, insightful, and show a clear understanding of literary device.
I have found them so useful that I recommend them to teachers (both new and experienced). They provide perspectives I had never thought of, helpful questions, and practice essays I find myself using again and again.
This series is simply the most helpful and concise tool I have ever found. I have even taken to recommending this book to my students. I know bad teacher. However, using this text breakdown and summary along with side by side texts my students have improved their short and long term understanding of literature by remarkable amounts.
Dollar for dollar you can not go wrong with any of these books.

MAX notes for Twelfth Night

This book was helpful when taking a class involving the play. The synopsis at the end was very helpful in understanding the plot. The questions at the end helped me to further enjoy the complex story and get its full meaning. If you appreciate reading other's comments about this book you will thoroughly appreciate this book.

I am a fan of the Gourmet Detective series. I love the descriptions of food and the different locales and predicaments that the Gourmet Detective somehow stumbles onto. Sure, this isn't a perfectly written mystery but its entertaining and delightful for food lovers all over! Having been to New Orleans, reading this book made me consider all the restaurants I didn't get to try on my last visit! Read this for the enjoyment of food entertainment!

Homicide is the furthest thing from the Gourmet Detective's mind when he is invited to New Orleans to authenticate a cook book that is going up for auction. When he arrives at the place where the book is supposed to be, he discovers that a bookseller bought it before auction even started.

He traces the bookseller back to his store only to find the man shot dead and the book is missing. He is asked to continue looking for the book by his original client and a group of female chefs who promise to pay him as well as feed him. That is an offer he can't resist but in between five meals he finds another corpse, this one a man who tried to sell him a counterfeit edition of the book. The Gourmet Detective doesn't know why there is so much interest in a cookbook but he intends to find out because his reputation is on the line.

ROUX THE DAY is a delightful mystery that doesn't take itself too seriously. The Gourmet Detective is a likable hero whose fascination with food is a sensual experience, one that the readers can experience by reading the mouth-watering descriptions of his meals. Peter Kings latest installment in his long-running series is a treat that readers will devour.

A much better mix this time

As soon as I finished reading the very first Gourmet Detective novel (published in 1994 but read last week), I leapt right into 'Roux the Day,' the latest in the series. This latest is dramatically better than the first, and so I am interested now in reading the rest of the titles in the series to see how the improvement progressed.
In this one, our nameless hero is in New Orleans on what should be a relatively straightforward affair: to verify whether an historic restaurant's chef's book (as distinct from a cookbook) being offered up for auction is the real deal. But someone else purchases the book before he can even see it, and the chase is on. This leads quickly to murder, and then to another murder, as well as to many, many lovingly described New Orleans meals and lots of coffee with chicory.
Many of the faults and idiosyncrasies I noted in 'The Gourmet Detective' have been weeded out of this title. Our hero is no longer comparing himself to every fictional detective ever published -- he has much more self-confidence now -- nor is he making us sit through long, descriptive passages detailing his every lunch and dinner (this doesn't contradict what I said in the last paragraph: here, the meals described have relevance to the story; before they felt more like space-filler intended to establish the hero's credentials as a gourmet). Most importantly, it's the detective's own skills that solve the mystery -- just what we'd expect in a mystery novel.
This isn't to say the story is perfect. There are still a few dots I'm not certain how he connected, even though I read the relevant passages several times over. On the whole, I still prefer Rick Riordan's atmospheric Tres Navarre series, set in San Antonio (one of the few American cities as interesting as New Orleans). But this one is growing on me, and I'm fairly certain I'll be looking up the other books in the Gourmet Detective series.

I have now read ALL the Keller 'Hit Man" series, and this one did not disappoint. Lawrence Block is one of my favorite murder and mayhem writers, as well as humorists 'with a twist' in his Bernie Rhodenbar mysteries. Keep on Mr. Block.

What happens to a family when a member's mind is uploaded to a computer? Williams' novelette explores this question with touching humor and through both light and dark fantasy. The opening of the story is very strong, especially for readers who loved Baum's Oz books. In contrast to much science fiction, this brief tale is character-driven. Well edited, well formatted, and well written, this prize-winning tale takes less than an hour to read.

Daddy's World by Walter Jon Williams

This is a short story.Probably somewhere around twenty to thirty pages. But it's really good as a short story and entertaining. It's also thought provoking. It asks some simple questions, which may or may not come up in the future.

Jamie lives in an idealistic life, which sounds like it's out of some children s novel. It's peopled with characters that could only live in books. But Jamie's Mom and Dad are there and so is his sister Becky. His days are simple filled with time to play but also time to learn.

Until one day when everyone seems to freeze. Stranger things happen where he sees parts of a person and hears a voice. This is the first indicator that things are not as they seem, which is actually pretty much a relief because this was reading too much like a children's tale.

Soon his sister makes a suggestion that they play matchmaker between Don Quixote and Princess Gigunda by deceiving Don into believing that Gigunda is really Dulcinea who, of course, Don Quixote loves. This antic heralds in a time when Becky, who is younger, starts to age faster than Jamie. This perplexes him but he's not ready to face what is happening.

As with short stories this becomes difficult to review because it's so short and a person doesn't want to give the whole story away.

This story is almost a cautionary tale. A modern fairy tale or fable. With the what if being what if we could download the mind of someone we love, who is dying, into a computer. It takes time to examine the ethics and legality of letting someone have that much control over your mind when you pass from this earth.

There are consequences as the conditions lasts longer than originally planned and eventually Becky, who has to live in both a real and fantasy world is a catalyst to Jamie gaining back more control of his life. But, just how will that work out for any of them.

You will have to read and see.

This short is a good introduction to the mind of Walter Jon Williams and his world building. I personally recommend his Implied Spaces novel as another good starting point.

Good Thought provoking SSF for all Future of the digital age related Science Fiction lovers.

The Celebrity Supernatural Series came about when I tried to write a holiday newsletter one Christmas for my friends.   As much as I tried to craft a chatty and factual report of the year just passed, I couldn't help making up stuff about real people.  And so, finally, in desperation of ever getting the thing out before my youngest made me a grandmother, I decided to abandon all pretense of writing non-fiction, and do what I do best...write stories.  I sent it around and everyone liked it so  much, I submitted it to New Witch Magazine.  Its first printing was the 2005 Beltane issue.   When my friend and publisher Patrice Fitzgerald approached me about making it available in e-format, I jumped at the chance, and a whole new world of possibilities opened up...

A modern-day witch decides to help her best friend evaluate her romance with a new man by conjuring up her friend's favorite, sexy celebrity as a birthday present. Does she suceed? You'll have to read this imaginative and humorous short story to find out. If you want to put a smile in your day, reading this story will do it. Annie Kelleher, a well known author of sci-fi romances has succeeded again with this Kindle single.

Fun Read

I really enjoyed this fun, interesting read. The writing was great and the imagery was vivid. Anne creates realistic and relatable characters. I could easily picture each one, it was like I already knew them. She also made me care about them, which I believe is the mark of a truly good short story considering there isn't a lot of time for character development. She makes an unlikely situation plausible and entertaining. Who wouldn't want to conjure Johnny Depp? Highly recommended.

Engaging Read

Full disclosure: I know Annie Kelleher. However, I'd read none of her work before now. And while I have to admit the premise seemed a bit of a stretch, I also have to say I read the story in one sitting and will read it again. After hooking us by developing characters that feel like people, rather than types (no mean feat for a short story), Annie puts those characters in a set of circumstance that seem impossible to be resolved -- but beg to be. And after making us realize there's a very canny imagination at work here, Annie makes it impossible to NOT want to know how the story ends. As a writer, I felt myself taking the measure of my own imagination while reading the work of Annie's. Bottom line?
