An alumnus of Appalachian State and Duke Universities, Davis holds her doctorate and is The Charles A. Dana Professor of Education at Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She previously published Chimney Rock and Rutherford County with Barry Hambright and Rutherford County in World War II with James M. Walker. Walker is both a contract and freelance photographer and a school volunteer, recently retired after 31 years as an educator in the Rutherford County public schools.

Nice Alternative to Cliff Notes

Max Notes have a slightly different take on classic literature. Nice to cross-reference with Cliff Notes or whatever other brand for different language and layout to help you understand the main topics. Of course nothing beats reading the book first and then referring to the notes. It's not a substitute for the real thing.

She graduated with a degree in Radio/TV/Film from the University of Texas at Austin where she was a proud member of the Longhorn Marching and Basketball Bands. She enjoys scuba diving, hiking, kayaking, swimming, spending too much time on video games, going to the theater, and playing in Disneyland. She volunteers for various non-profit organizations, travels whenever she can, collects and plays multiple instruments including the trumpet, cello, and great highland bagpipes, and is also a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

A tale of love, loss, and redemption

M. L. Rice writes with clear knowledge of her subject matter. Born and raised in Texas, and now in the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, she gives her readers a heroine who is born and raised in a small Western Texas town. Bryce Montgomery seemingly has it all. She is the only child of loving parents, a champion swimmer, an honor student, as well as tall, blond and beautiful. In addition, Bryce has a strong determination to succeed. As the book opens, all of these qualities have taken her to the final months of her senior year of high school. Bryce has two 'tight' girl friends which she 'hangs' with. The only problem Bryce has with her life is the small mindedness of her hometown, and her mother's very fundamentalist church. She can't wait to graduate, and attend the Coast Guard Academy in New England.

What follows is a true test of Bryce's inner strength and her strong friendships. When Bryce's dreams are shattered and everything changes, will she be able to try again? And will she be able to find love, now that she is a different person?

Rice has given her readers a 'can't put it down' book, with excellent character development, particularly of Bryce, but also of her friends. Bryce is extremely likeable, and Rice writes so well that readers will be caring, crying, and cheering for her heroine. In addition, she gives readers a true picture of the Coast Guard and their work. This was particularly timely as today's L.A. Times had a story about the death, on duty, of a Coast Guard officer. Another great read from Bold Strokes Books!

A rich tale of love, loss and triumph

This is a rich tale of love, loss and triumph by perseverance ... starting with Bryce's coming-out at High School the fundamentalist attitude of her parents is one very well depicted layer of this book, another is the strength of friendship which carries Bryce through her most difficult times later in life and if that were not enough ML Rice adds another master stroke with the tale of devastation and love. This is not a classic romance, but more a tale of life, loss and triumph. A story which tells how it gets better, how to live as a veteran, how to love and how to live.
The story telling is mature, deep and at the same time even at the low points laced with optimism and perseverance. The opening scene is very well done and from then on its difficult to stop reading. Kudos!

And three cheers for Chaplain Thomas - every kid with fundamentalist parents ought to have a champion like him!

Very sweet story

Absolutely a wonderful story for younger readers, though I fully enjoyed this book myself.

Bryce was a senior in high school with dreams of getting into the coast guard academy. She never really took notice of boys or girls. Then after a prom experience where the boy went to far and was mean, a girl (Leah) came to her rescue. Leah was a sweet person and had had a crush on Bryce for years. They became close and ultimately became good friends.

From this experience Bryce realized that she was gay and never looked back. Until her bible thumping parents walked in on them lying in bed together naked.

Two things I like most about the story.
1) Bryce never backed down against her parents about being gay and never doubted herself on that front. No angst which was very brave! Though she had an out unlike many young kids going off to college.

2) Bryce was a gorgeous person inside and out and was able to find true love after a tragedy in the coast guard. It is predictable, but I still loved the story.

I highly recommend.

Truly disappointed in Amazon, the publisher and Nora

This book was presented as a 2013 copyright making the buyer believe it was a newly published book. As I always liked Nora's books, I purchased it even though it was $6.99, which I normally don't pay for light entertainment books. The first clue that this was an old book wad when Dillon pulled out a cigarette. The farther I read I realized this was a book I read many, many years ago. The more I read, the more it showed this story was from a different time and era in which women thought differently about being bullied by men and thinking that was romantic. Ugh! I hate that I was duped into buying this out-of-date book. And at a price that is highway robbery. I am retired and on a limited income. I can't travel like I would like so travel to places in the imagination of the story. It is a sad commentary on the greed of corporate America that businesses cheat people out of their hard earned dollars without qualm. But you won't do this again as now I'm savvy to the repressive practice of putting old books out as new ones. Shame on all if you!

I WAS ONLY INTO THE STORY A FEW PAGES WHEN I REALIZED THAT I HAD READ THIS STORY YEARS AGO. I RESENT 'RE RELEASING AN OLD BOOK WITH A NEW COVER AS THOUGH IT WAS A RECENTLY PUBLISHED STORY. INSTEAD OF $7 IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE FREE LIST .NORA YOU WON'T FOOL ME AGAIN.

I was disappointed. There is zero depth

Very Disappointing. I'm a big fan of BBT and a big fan of autobiographies so my expectations were high. Wow, I was disappointed. There is zero depth, very much superficial. Also, I felt he came across narcissistic and pretentious. I've always followed BBT, therefore, I've read these same stories before. I was hoping for something more than just rehashing the same tabloid stories. Ironically, at the end of his book he complains about how everyone has a voice now due to the internet; Well, I do agree with him on that account; yet here is my voice. (Did those other reviews read the same book I did? I'm going to call "BS" on those reviews. If your a fan of BBT, no need to read this book, you already know what he has to say.

Billy Bobs handbook on grit and determination.

Wow wow and WOW!!!! Mr. Thornton has had the most extreme life that I've read about so far. His personally written and directed movie Sling Blade, all be it a master peice, pales in comparison to his real life. The only parts of this book that didn't keep my attention was the parts about his current musical endeavors but it's his passion and I appreciate his hard work he's put into that as well as his incredible journey to become the artist he is. He shows something that rarely exists in today's youth and that is simply "grit". The grit he shows in all the obstacles that had surrounded him from his birth and kept coming through his youth is truly inspirational. I never knew why I liked him and knew he was the kinda guy I could just sit on the porch with and carry on a conversation about pretty darn near any subject, but reading his story has solidified that thought. It's one of those books that in 30 more years I want to read part 2 of his life to know how it ends up, not the tabloid tmz story but the real deal, Billy's story. Now I'm off to watch Jane Mansfields Car (read the book and you'll understand)!!
