Be prepared, series fans, for a very different kind of Brunetti novel, but one I suspect you'll greatly enjoy.

For one thing, this 22nd Commissario Guido Brunetti mystery is not a Questura case. It's a story that evolves from Paola Falier Brunetti's concern and curiosity about the death of the boy from the Brunetti family's dry cleaners whom they'd seen there for years, standing in the back room, folding things and always looking so sad. Most customers knew him as "The boy who didn't speak" and assumed he was a relative of the proprietors, and that he was not only deaf but probably also mute. No one seemed to know his name. At Paola's urging, Brunetti starts looking into what had happened and soon finds that the dead boy/man did have a name and a cold and taciturn mother he lived with. Was his death accidental or intentional? And if intentional, was it suicide or murder? No way to tell.

Brunetti also finds that nowhere in the public records is there any evidence this boy/man had ever existed. That conundrum piques the interest of some of Brunetti's Questura colleagues. Just as this story is quite a bit different from what we're used to, so too are the supporting roles. Brunetti's sidekick, Vianello, gets involved for awhile, then drops out of the picture. Everyone's favorite computer hacker, Elettra, has relatively little to do here, as does Patta, who thinks Brunetti's still out investigating a case he's already solved. Meanwhile, we get to spend quite a lot of time getting to know Foa and Pucetti a lot better. Then, about halfway through, comes a nice surprise when Commissaria Claudia Griffoni, the only female detective at the Questura, who was introduced five or six books ago and hasn't been seen since, takes over the sidekick role usually played by Vianello.

As for the story itself: Unusual, to say the least, absolutely fascinating, populated with some exceedingly odd characters and told in a somewhat more leisurely style than we're used to. And, in the end, the Bad Egg'll get one whale of a comeuppance. Highly recommended for series fans. Probably not the best choice for newbies.

The Golden Egg -- a Scrambled Verdict

On finishing The Golden Egg, I mentally congratulated Donna Leon on a fine return to solid mystery writing. After a few less-than-satisfying Brunetti novels over the past several years, I was starting to wonder if her best days were past. Then the stand alone, non-Brunetti novel The Jewels of Paradise, appeared last year, and while it was great to see an established writer taking a risk, the story itself was underwhelming.

The Golden Egg kept me guessing throughout, didn't rely (entirely) on Signorina Elettra's miraculous computer hacking skills, and ended with a shocking discovery. As usual with Donna Leon, there is not necessarily a crime or even a murder, although there is a mysterious death right off the bat. Whether it was murder is Brunetti's puzzle to solve, and apparently there is nothing else requiring his attention that week, so he investigates what everyone else assumes is an accidental death.

In traditional police procedural fashion, Brunetti interviews, detects, and finds layers of deception and decades of greed. Those who enjoy catching up with Brunetti's family will enjoy the mealtime discussions with Paola and the kids. After a week of detecting, Brunetti has solved a mystery, but other questions remain.

A few days after finishing The Golden Egg, I found myself wondering if there weren't some holes in the story. The shocking discovery -- was that even a possibility? Why doesn't Elettra quit doing the cops' work for them and get a lucrative job in computer security?

So -- good story for a weekend, but don't think about it too much.

Satisfying read

I have read most of this series, greatly enjoying the characters, the storyline, the lightly woven social commentary, and of course, the charming and disarming setting, Venice. This particular book is much more like the earlier Donna Leone books in style and construct. It is a satisfying read and felt like reconnecting with dear friends. I recommend this book to enthusiasts of Brunetti and all his friends and cohorts.

Good read, if you can overlook a lot!!!

I will most likely add a star to this review, as I have yet to even finish the book! I could not, however, continue reading until I asked the question....does anyone else realize that this author knows absolutely NOTHING about college football? If you are going to make your hero a college football star get your facts straight. College Football games in every division take place on Saturdays from September to early December! Bowl games occur from mid/late December up to the Championship game in early January (this year January 7th RTR)! Occasionally, maybe once a season, a team will play on a Thursday or Friday night. During the regular season games rarely, if ever, are played on Tuesdays or Wednesdays! Games are NEVER played during the Winter and Spring! I admit that it is actually difficult at times to decide what time during a college year the book is taking place? But, I believe, most of the story develops during the Winter/Spring semester? It's frustrating, really frustrating, to want to like a book; to enjoy certain characters; anticipate the development of a romance; and then find yourself pulled out of the story because of glaring mistakes and inconsistencies! UGH! I will complete the book anyway, but I am honestly tempted to rewrite the entire story for my own benefit because the characters deserve better and frankly, as readers, so do you and I!

OK, just finished the book! If possible, I would add a half star! While I enjoyed watching Zander and Sedona's romance develop, I just cannot get past the technical discrepancies in the novel. Bad editing? Maybe. But, unless the author's husband mistook her questions for inquiries about Futbol/Soccor, there is zero excuse for so misrepresenting the hero's "day job" as a college football quarterback! The only truism? Baylor would most likely destroy Leigh's make-believe team in the "Championship."

I know, I know it's a romance novel! What do I love? Zander! He is a terrific hero! Really, I hope my two young daughters find a boy exactly like him! He truly has to be the most patient young man around. I respect Sedona and like her on the whole. She is incredibly self-absorbed though, and I am not sure the loss in her past really supports her level of emotional disregard in the end. Yes, she comes around, and I appreciate the HEA, but she is damn lucky in her hero!

I also liked the epilogue from Keiran's POV. Although, I feel it was too short and the "cliffhanger" was not really a surprise, at all. I imagine, Leigh is setting up a sequel (at least). I hope she is not suggesting a "love triangle" stress in a follow-up because that would certainly destroy the strength and beauty of Sedona and Keiran's friendship as well as undermining Keiran's as a strong hero in his own right.

Obviously, I really liked the premise and characters in this book or i would notnhave finished the book, nor written my first ever Amazon review. I was hoping to give a 4 star rating, but Sedona let me down near the end and her "revelation" was helped along both by Zander's love and understanding and the unforeseen circumstance. Also, and finally, know your facts when a profession, sport, talent, etc is a major aspect of your story!! Bottomline!

love finds you in weird ways

I loved Sedona and Zander's story, of course I love any romance story that doesn't have a cliffhanger. What made the book fabulous were the quirky lines between the characters especially between Zander and his buddies. "Yes, she is. And if you don't stop staring at her fine-ness, I'm going to clobber all of you side by side into the ground." I also love when Sedona explains why she does PDA it really made my heart mealt. "I'm proud to have you as my boyfriend Zander. I think that gives me the right to kiss you or hug you or hold you in public. It's about time people get used to that." I really can't wait to see if the author has any more books come out I truly enjoyed this book a lot.

Love Unexpected

I am a sucker for a good romance! Sedona Is a very driven young lady who has her life planned out. She knows what she wants and has the "Rules" to help her get there. Focus on school, get through clinicals, go to bed at a decent hour and stick with the plan. Boyfriends are not in the plan they are only a distraction that is not needed, or is it? Zander is a jock, his parents are well known and the media loves to know all about his social life. That is as far from the plan as you can get, but sometimes it's the things you do not plan that show you what you want isn't always what you need. Anne's story shows us that life does not always go the way you expect it to, people are not always what they seem and love may find you when you least expect it. If you enjoy a good romance novel then introduce yourself to Sedona and Zander! I really hope there will be a second book for a character I would love to know a little more about but only time will tell. ;) Check this one out

production uninspired

For such a great man, this book is a disservice that I feel will be a turn-off when kids or others come across a better-produced book. The font contrast of large-bold on a white background starts to give me a headache (I was reading it on the PC, maybe the actual kindle is better). The quotes and vocabulary are more advanced than the structure of the book would lead you to believe is the intended audience. The pictures and text often feel disconnected. The quotations need some explanatory text to help kids understand him and not think he's crazy. We can hope for a better edition in the future.

Nothing new or surprising here, but it is a good introduction to the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The text is definitely written so that beginning readers can understand it, although parents may have to help their young readers to truly understand the meaning behind some of Dr. King's quotes at the end of the book.
