Another wonderful story!

I read this book years ago, but had forgotten that Grace wove Doctor Whitman into the story. Being from Washington and enjoying history, the story of the Whitman massacre is familiar. Beautifully written, I love Miranda's vocabulary and quaint way of speaking.

Awesome, delicious recipes

At first glance this book might not seem that different from other good healthful eating cookbooks, such as "EatingWell Serves Two" and its ilk. They all contain plenty of recipes with lean meats, whole grains, etc. They all contain great helpful hints to assist you through understanding how to work with healthy foods, how to make them interesting, etc. They all contain some nice photographs to make the food seem alluring and yummy.

However, to me there's one key difference. Tosca Reno's recipes aren't bland.

I'm well aware that there's a sizable contingent of people out there who want their diet food to resemble bland, "normal" American fare as much as possible; I'm not going to mark down a book for catering to that crowd, even though I don't personally enjoy that approach.

However, I'm certainly happy to sing the praises of a book that finally satisfies my desire for flavorful, creative diet food. I know it can be done, and it's my feeling that part of the reason a lot of people think diet food sucks is because they want flavorful food and most diet books cater to the safe, bland crowd. Well, Tosca Reno is one health and fitness advocate who doesn't seem to believe in that.

One of the recipes we tried from this book was a stuffed pumpkin recipe that involved things like ground bison and wild rice. It was incredibly delicious, even as leftovers---one of those recipes that don't taste like diet food at all (and that's the way it should be!).

Another was a breakfast burrito that wowed us so much that we use variations on it regularly now as a savory break from hot breakfast cereal.

There's a white bean tuna spread that I like as much as standard tuna salad (and it's a lot healthier!), and a couscous salad with chevre, oregano, and vegetables that's out of this world.

If you're the kind of person who finds most healthy or diet cookbooks to be bland and underwhelming, then I suggest you try this one instead. It challenges your creativity, suggests ways to work with unusual ingredients, and provides all the flavor those other books are missing!

Wishing other cookbooks would learn from this one...

This is flat out - the best cookbook I've ever come across. There is a color picture, nutritional information, prep and cooking times, and "tips" for EVERY recipe. Ingredients are printed in their own color text - making it easy to scan the page for ingredients when preparing to shop/plan.

Ingredients are pretty average - not so obscure that you can't find them at your local store. There is an occasional oil or grain that is not so commonplace, but Tosca offers substitutions for most of those ingredients (or you can sub with things on your own fairly easily). Or you can always find them on amazon - and most likely save some $ there as well.

As for kiddos - kids are easily influenced - if they see you eating a certain way - they will eventually come around. The other part I've found helpful in getting kids to eat healthier - presentation. That is the #1 most important thing when feeding children. Kids like dipping - they like finger foods, or creating their own meal... which a lot of these recipes allow for.

I'm not sure why one review stated recipes are too long either. Recipes times range from 10-60 minutes, with most averaging around the 30-45 minute time frame. If you read through most recipes you can come up with ways to shorten times (or Tosca suggests them). Things that we do for example... prep veggies the morning before (or the entire dish), use leftovers - chicken/rice/etc, instead of cooking things separately throw them in together from the beginning, canned/jar substitutes(beans, garlic, etc). And a lot of the cooking times vary based on your appliances. I can usually knock 5-10 minutes off because our oven cooks faster than what is usually listed.

Many of the animal proteins she suggests are becoming more readily available - turkey & buffalo...I can find both at our local Kroger or Meijers. Sams Club is carrying ground turkey and turkey breasts now for a decent price as well.

Fat content is high"er" on some recipes, but it's not due to saturated or trans fats. I have high cholesterol and I thought that cutting out all fats would be the way to lower it - WRONG. You can't cut fat out of your diet entirely - your body needs those just as much as anything else. You have to choose the right kinds of fats - which Tosca does wisely in each recipe. The key to good nutrition and healthy eating is finding the right balance - not by cutting one thing out or increasing another.

Calories may be higher on some recipes, but if you're eating the 'clean-eating' way... you'll find that you can still manage to be under your total calories per day. The idea Tosca suggests at the beginning of the book: Eat 5-6 small meals every day by eating every 2-3 hours (which is why portion sizes are smaller) - if you do so - you won't be hungry and feel a need to 'super size'; combine lean protein and complex carbs at every meal; drink at least 8 cups of water every day; never miss a meal; carry a cooler with clean-eating foods to get you through the day; avoid over-processed, refined foods (white flour and sugar are EVIL); avoid anything loaded with sugar (soda, juices, etc); avoid alcohol (another sugar); depend on fresh fruits and veggies for fiber, vitamins and enzymes; and stick to proper portion sizes!

As for cost, some ingredients are more costly. However, if you're eating this way, you'll find yourself eating smaller amounts because your body will be using more of the food.

Proteins are all lean - and she offers ways to make recipes gluten free or vegan to accommodate different eating habits. Seasonings involve fresh herbs, fruits, different - good 4 u - oils, etc.

The Eat-Clean DIET Cookbook features over 150 EASY recipes. Yes, they really are pretty easy, incorporating quicker stir-frys, crock pot cooking, handheld blenders, and food processors. Trying the Applesauce Oatmeal Muffins and the Power Oatmeal Pancakes, I found the recipes simple to prepare, low in sugar, protein adequate, and whole grain inclusive. Plus, my family loved them! Poorly written ridiculous book...ZERO stars

This is a poorly written, ridiculous book, filled with grammar errors and an absurd perspective on the dating relationship. Actually, it's a shame to call this a book - it really is a bad blog made into print. At first I thought the author's comments were tongue-in-cheek, and would eventually transform into a balanced and insightful look at male-female relationships. Instead, I found the entirety of the book shallow.

About the Author

Susan Coolidge was the pen name of nineteenth-century American author Sarah Chauncey Woolsey. Born to wealth, Coolidge worked as a nurse during the Civil War before returning to her family home to take up a career in writing. Although best known for her classic Katy series of children s novels including What Katy Did and What Katy Did Next, Coolidge also published more than twenty works of fiction, and edited The Autobiography and Correspondence of Mrs. Delaney and The Diary and Letter of Frances Burney. Coolidge died in 1905.

Timeless classic!

In this sequel to "What Katy Did," the teenage Katy and younger sister Clover attend a Massachusetts boarding school for girls.

Although Katy is now recovered from the horrific accident which caused her to be bedridden for several years in the prior novel, she and Clover face many challenges in this new chapter of their lives. For starters, they have never been so far away from home and their family, which includes their widowed father and four younger siblings. Then, there's the strictness of the girls-only school, run by unmarried women who seem to relish punishing the students for the slightest infractions.

Added to their troubles is the fact that Cousin Lilly is also a student at the school. Despite being a relative, Lilly can hardly be called a friend.

Yet throughout their year at school, Katy and Clover learn a great deal - both in the classroom and in life, as they make friends with the lively and popular Rosalind Redmond, better known as "Rose Red," and others. All in all, it's a year the Carr sisters will never forget.

Despite the book being published over a century ago, Coolidge writes realistic characters with timeless teenage problems. Readers of all ages and eras are bound to identify with Katy and Clover, their family and friends.
