A Nice Overview

This book was well organized and did a good job of covering Churchill's life and accomplishments from birth until death. It wasn't a "work of art" in terms of writing, but that's precisely the point of a series like this--to give readers the best overview of a topic without all the padding. All in all it's a pretty good little book. I think it would have been better if there had been references at the end, but still worth a look for anyone interested in Winston Churchill or History in general.

If you are a history enthusiast, a student, or just looking to expand your knowledge, this is an excellent book for you. The book follows the life and career of Winston Churchill. While he was a well-known public figure throughout England and the world, this gives details of his early life, personal life, and military history. If you do not know much about this man, this is an excellent start to learning about who he was.

Straightforward Overview

This book accomplishes its objective; to provide the reader with the essential aspects of Winston Churchill's like and work. I suspect that like most readers I am most familier with Churchill's exploits during WWII. However, what I found most interesting and surprising was how his pre-war career was marked by successes as well as some dismal failures. Churchill's life was very colorful, and the author touches on all of the main points in simple, clear, balanced prose.
However, there is no context or perspective provided. I realize this is a "Very Brief History" and recognize the space limitations that this imposes. I would have liked to see a few more paragraphs describing political motivations, overall philosophies and even family relationships. Without even brief paragraphs about these issues, the reader is left wondeering if Churchill was a political opportunist, unapologetic imperialist, and a hugh egotist. I"ll have to read other books to get even a flavor of these questions.

Once Upon A Time with a twist!

I read the first set of prequels in three days, and I devoured the second set in three hours. Once again, Cameron Jace has shown that he is more than capable of taking the fairy tales we know and love and twisting them into a delightfully dark tale. I'm waiting on edge for Snow White Sorrow to be released but until then, the prequels are worth a second read!

Creative and fresh!!!

Cameron Jace has done it again! I love his fresh, innovative approach to fairytales we know and love (or do we know them?) He is weaving an intricate web of memorable characters, I can't wait to know more about them. I am eagerly awaiting the first full-length novel.

This set has two of my favorite Prequels!

"Once Beauty Twice Beast" was one of the best Prequels, and that's entirely thanks to the clever, clever twist the author pulled off. He managed to confuse me a bit when I saw that the Beast was actually a girl, and the beautiful boy who got trapped in the cursed castle was looking for the enchanted rose to heal his mother. But when things are turned upside down, everything makes sense... or some sort of sense. I loved it! Can't wait to read these two characters' entire story. I hope Cameron Jace will mention them again in the series.

"Moon and Madly". Oh, yes, "Moon and Madly"! This is the story of my favorite couple - Jack Madly and Moongirl/Marmalade (Marmalade? seriously? couldn't he have come up with a nicer name? or, was it supposed to be unrealistic and unpredictable? well, it sure was). I already told you (and Jack constantly repeats it): someone should write a book about this lovely boy. He is smart, cute, badass, he's the best thief in Sorrow, he stole from the Queen herself, and the Devil, and he literally lives in the clouds. I can totally understand why the Moon fell (yes, fell head-first in a swamp) in love with him. He steals from the Goblins, teases them about their stupidity, tricks them, and saves the girl who was supposed to save him. The whole story is fun and sweet, and all I can hope for is that I'll get to see Jack and Marmalade as often as possible, and that Jack will somehow find out who his mermaid girlfriend is without having to die afterwards. I see a lot of potential in this character, and he will probably realize who the girl is after he falls in love with her... the second time. These two need as much space as possible in the main series, and I hope Cameron Jace will write that book about Jack.

"Rumpelstein". I always thought that Rumpelstiltskin is one of the most intriguing fairytale characters. It's not only the fact that one of the themes in the Grimm fairytale is the power of names, but also that the character itself is quite ambiguous. In the original fairytale, he is called many things (also due to the fact that his real name is only revealed somewhere at the end): hobgoblin, dwarf, little man, manikin, even little gentleman. I think this implies that he can be anything, that he can somehow change shape. Also, have you noticed that Rumpelstiltskin is not entirely evil in the original fairytale? He does help the miller's daughter... Anyway, back to Cameron Jace's story. I liked how he combined the story of Rumpelstiltskin with the story of Rapunzel, and also how he took the time to develop this particular character, following his life from a poor man who worked hard for his family, a father who lost his daughter, Rapunzel, and his life when he opposed the Queen of Sorrow, to a dark and deformed creature that signed a contract with the Devil. Rumpelstiltskin's story is complex, and I loved that. Cameron Jace's Rumple is a man who has lost his way, who needs to remember why he is actually stealing children for the Devil, and discover who the one who brought him back to life is. He has a purpose; he just can't remember it. So, I can't wait to see how this character develops.

"Jawigi" was a good read, and I like how it is always emphasized that some characters may lie, if not all of them. I guess I'm a reader who loves being lied to. It makes things so much more interesting. In this one, the Queen of Sorrow appears as a positive character, a mother who would do anything to save her unborn daughter. The queen is quite complex, especially because she is not entirely good or evil. Or, she hasn't always been evil.

An Enjoyable Journey

Easy to read - enjoyable writing style with an earthy perspective. Catherine uses her hiking experiences as a metaphor for life. "Don't look up to see how far you still have to climb; instead, look back to see how far you've climbed already." Life is a journey, and she shares her one-step-at-a time approach.

Life can have tragedy and adversity, which we would eliminate if we could. However, it is the fruit that grows from these experiences that make the journey worthwhile. She advises us to believe in ourselves and choose to be happy.

We can find the life we want hiding in plain site...in the life we have now. Stay in the moment - not regretting a past you can't change, or trying to structure or repair a future that hasn't even arrived. Everything you need is here - when doors slam in your face, look around and see if another door is open.

I especially enjoyed her idea of writing "daily gratitudes" - finding something to be grateful for every day by looking and listening in a different way:
- "That lovely moment when it's suddenly possible to grasp that we are exactly where we are meant to be."
- "Everything that happens to me in life, whether I like it or not, seems to steer me down the right path."

An enjoyable journey. Very insightful. If you are a hiker, you will appreciate it even more.

Lessons in Life

I am flummoxed by some of the low-star reviews that I read on Amazon. "Seedy life"??? Seriously? That's what you got out of this?

This book is a collection of essays written to express the author's life lessons. Some were learned the hard way. Yes, like most of us, she went through some pretty rough times in order to get where she is now. So what? Does this give anyone the right to look down their nose at her? Is a person not allowed to grow and develop and change? Is a person not allowed to share what they've learned with others?

As a person who has had to learn some pretty hard lessons (like everybody else), I appreciate Hyde for putting into words some of the thoughts and feelings that I've had as I've traveled my own steep path. I'm thankful for finding out that she has a Facebook page (which I intend to bookmark), and a #DailyGratitude that I can subscribe to. I need all the help I can get in learning to master the art of positivity and gratitude. Thank you for listing this book for free on Kindle and allowing me to become aware. It came along at just the right time.

If you are on a journey of learning to love and accept and be at peace with yourself, this book might give you some inspiration on how to get there.

Catherine chooses to write about such down to earth and positive topics. I found something to take away from almost every excerpt included in this book. What a great attitude to live by. I've read other books by this same author and haven't been disappointed with any of them. Keep it up!

Through carefully constructed chapters, the book provides details on the essential aspects of ethical knowledge that students need to work through ethical problems and make sound decisions:
We begin in Chapter 1 by examining several relevant and important themes in contemporary nursing and social work practice. These themes are ethics and branches of ethics, morals, and values. This is to help readers learn or reinforce existing knowledge of the themes.
Chapter 2 explores the main reasons given for ethics in nursing and social work education. The themes discussed include the need to meet requirements of the law, develop knowledge required for dealing with ethical dilemmas, gain knowledge of how to handle conflict that may arise in relationship with other professionals, and deal with cultural diversity of patient and client groups. The chapter will argue that ethical education is crucial to achieving the above goals.
The focus of Chapter 3 is firmly on consideration of nursing and social work as moral practice and duties to act ethically. The themes covered include duty to protect vulnerable people, duty to act as patient’s or client’s advocate, duty to assess potential risks and empower those in care, the need to work within ethical standards and laws, and the duty to maintain confidentiality of information within professional boundaries.
Chapter 4 explores value of the three ethical theories that prescribe morally right actions. The chapter also examines some of the major criticisms of the individual theories and discusses how they differ from each other.
Chapter 5 explores the four ethical principles and how they inform nursing and social work practice. As conflicting principles often give rise to ethical dilemma, the chapter will discuss model for screening ethical principles and use case studies and discussions to illustrate how ethical dilemma could be resolved by identifying and applying the principle or legal obligation that take precedence over others.
Chapter 6 examines the common ethical issues and dilemmas nursing and social work professionals usually face in practice. The issues discussed include conflicting moral imperative, informed consent, best interest, and giving information and equitab

Entertaining and amusing, we get to tag along on the adventures of a twelve year old girl. Her tendency to attract bad luck is met with good humor and a lot of resilience, which adds to the depth of the book. A fun book for both kids and adults alike.

I liked this story because the way it goes is just extraordinary!!!!!!!!!!!But the thing I kind of didn't like about it was that it's too short. I read this whole entire book in 1-2 hours,but it's still a great book of course!!! You HAVE to buy this book!!!!!!!!!!!It's so worth the money!!!!! Sexy and Smart

What I like about Caitlyn is that she's flawed. While she's a smart woman who knows what she wants, she gets tripped up by her past imperfections. Her ex-husband makes a perfect foil since his flaw is his wanting her.

Don't read this book if you don't like sex. It's there and it's there a lot. Devlin doesn't hold back on showing the physical attraction her characters have for one another--and occasionally the heat that happens when they fight.

The story is solid with a fairly icky demon antagonist. There were times when the descriptions of the scenes got to me. Right? Not the sex but the dead bodies. I know!

I am a fan of Devilin's and did read the first in this series. I don't think you have to read the first, but you would be doing yourself a favor if you did. Shattered Souls (A Caitlyn O'Connell Novel) was a great read. If I had to compare, I'd go with SS being my slight favorite over LS, book 2.

Enjoyable paranormal mystery

Caitlyn & her partner Jason are truly enjoyable and flawed characters to read about. Add to that a nasty demon and the interesting concept of taking your victims into the past in order to kill them and you've got yourselves a darn good read.

I will freely admit that I could have done with less steamy sex. That only detracts in my humble opinion. The book is still a great read.

Off The Sauce.....On The Magic......

This series must be read in order. The first book is Shattered Souls (A Caitlyn O'Connell Novel Book 1). This is the second book.

This is another awesome installment in the Caitlyn O'Connell series. Cait and Sam are still testing the waters of their newly renewed relationship and Cait is trying her best to stop hiding things and start opening up all the while trying to make Sam proud and stay sober. A new infidelity case for her PI business turns out to be more than she bargained for and forces her to team up with her sexy not so ex-husband when her subject who she witnessed entering the hotel alive a few minuets before, turns out to be the desiccated remains found in the hotel earlier that day. Can Cait figure out the culprit before more women die or will she fail and loose the one person who means the most to her in the world.

I cannot wait to see what else Devlin has in store for us next and what other tricks Cait has up her sleeve!

A good plan too, if only the local "character" hadn't turned up missing with him fingered as the prime suspect.  Now if he ever wants to get out of this sleepy desert asylum before the mob finds him, he's going to have to find her. Simple?  Fat chance.

Hilariously funny

Fat Chance is a hilarious adventure from start to finish. Sean McDermott is a snarky New York detective who finds himself stuck in a small New Mexican town and forced to solve a missing person's case, in which he becomes the prime suspect. He meets a host of interesting personalities from the waitress at the diner who tells him that of course he shouldn't have ordered the eggs if he's allergic to peppers to the older Asian woman whose Cadillac has been altered to drive only under 40 mph to the mechanic whose name is Not Jim. The novel kept me up at night wondering what the oddball characters would do next. McDermott's dry wit is riotously funny, and the mystery keeps you guessing and has a satisfying conclusion. I highly recommend Fat Chance to anyone who enjoys humor or a good mystery.

Once is enough

Sean is a not so successful P.I. From NY. Long story...short! He borrows a Mercedes from a friend of his deceased father, and starts out on a cross-country trip to L.A. Is the mob really after him? When his borrowed car goes kaput he is forced to wait for repairs and finds himself stranded in a fictional New Mexico town (village) called Mystic Falls. Well, there are lots of unbelievable weird people in the little desert town. One of the characters is a teenager working as a maid at the Inn where Sean is staying. She is intent upon seducing Sean. Upon returning to his room at the Inn, Sean is surprised by the nude young lady lying on his bed waiting for his return. However tempted he might be to.....well.... Sean quickly bundles the underage seductress up in a sheet and sends her home to grandpa with whom she lives. He designates another weird individual Patty Chance, commonly called Fat Chance, to deliver the hormonal crazed teen back to the nearby reservation where Gramps lives. Then it is discovered that Fat Chance is missing. Sean is considered a suspect in the disappearance and decides to "help" the police find the missing woman. He continually finds himself harassed, followed and intimidated by an aged Japanese lady who is staying at the same Inn as Sean. The little old lady has a somewhat diminishing memory/personality and, in my opinion, proves to be the funniest of all the characters in this farce called a novel. In desperation, Sean makes her his assistant in his search for the missing Fat Chance. They embark upon an adventure that is supposedly funny. There are a few chuckles and some four letter f and s words but mostly absurd behavior. All of the characters are made to appear dumb, dumb and dumber. Most of the characters are dubious.....and the plot is slow going. The book is fairly well edited; however, there are some remaining grammar errors and typos that escaped correction.

I got this book because of the many 5 star reviews that said it was witty, hilarious and a page turner. I did not find it very funny or even a page turner. I got this book as a freebie so I will give it 2 stars for effort.

Fun, Light Read

This is a fun, light read that is easy to get lost in. Sean McDermott is a private detective that bumbles his way through life with a quick, sarcastic wit. His character is entertaining, even if his sarcasm is at times irritating to those around him.

The cast of side characters is well crafted, unique, and kept me fully engaged. I particularly loved the side kick Sean picked up on the case in Mystic Falls. The interplay between them had some laugh out loud moments.

The story is held up more by the zany characters than an intricate plot. Hard-core mystery fans might find the ending a little too conveniently wrapped up. And there isn't a lot of emotional depth here for readers wanting a strong connection. Overall, I think this is the perfect book for those looking for a short escape and some comic relief.
