When an author is in love with a subject, it shows in the way he or she writes about it. This author has been living with gardening, farming, cooking, for almost a lifetime. She knows the ins and outs of these things and she is keen on passing on her knowledge to anyone who wants to get involved for any reason, and there are many smart reasons for doing so. Nicolette Goff's book on under cover gardening is a wonderful guide, not only for beginners but also for seasoned under cover garden participants. It goes into so many aspects of the craft. Some, I never knew about until I read the book."

Excellent resource

This book is an excellent resource for those wanting to extend their gardening season. It covers virtually every type of crop protection in sufficient detail that even the most inexperienced gardener can use. It's well organized, beginning with the smallest and easiest types of crop covers and finishing with greenhouses. It discusses crop covers to fit any budget or garden style and has several online resources at the end of the book. My only complaint is the lack of illustrations (and it's such a small one that it still deserves 5 stars.) There were a few good illustrations for some of the instructions, but there were a couple places I wished there were a picture or two to illustrate. But I am a visual learner, so don't let that deter you from buying this book. It's still a 5-star book and a keeper. It's definitely worth your time and money to get and read this great resource book.

A Good Resource for the Home Gardner

One thing I really like about this book is the historical perspective on how protective gardening evolved from earliest times. The author discusses how the Romans as early as 20BC used simple but effective methods for protecting plants from extreme weather conditions.

The author gives many practical solutions for the modern home gardener, and covers areas such as; wind, rain, and freezing temperatures, with most all of her approaches being easy to apply, and inexpensive as well.

The history and types of greenhouses are discussed, including the basics on greenhouse design that anyone thinking of building their own will find immensely helpful. There is even a section on the various types of watering systems and the ideal situation that each one works best with.

This is a great book for anyone wishing to get involved with more sophisticated types of home gardening, or those who want to take the "next big step" and build their own greenhouse from the ground up.

I liked the idea of this book.

The book had an interesting concept and seems to hint that there may be more coming. I really liked the way the author linked mysogeny to a deficiency in male genitalia.

However, I have some serious complaints about the failure of the heroine to evolve. The heroine always seemed to be waiting for someone to tell her what to do. She adamantly refused to question authority in any significant way even when confronted with real atrocities. (There was some after-the-fact pointless whining about how they let her be badly treated as a child). With a few exceptions, things went best when she thought for herself and acted on her own initiative. However, she stubbornly clung to her prior identity. What will it take for her to stop letting people make decisions for her when so few of those decisions are actually in her best interests?

I was mostly disappointed because the heroine actually regressed instead of stepping forward. She was changed and she said she believed she grew, but at the end of the book, she recklessly tossed any personal growth in the rubbish heap and, bewilderingly, decided that enslavement was a good look for her, meekly agreeing to being placed in an even more powerless position than she was at the beginning of the book. Having someone treat a normal person like that would have turned him or her into exactly the kind of person they feared; he/she would have crushed them like bugs while they were still weak. She felt she needed to be punished for having the ability to perform terrible acts even though she repeatedly demonstrated that she had neither the personal capacity nor inclination to do so??!!?? Crazy. Even if she didn't want to assert herself, she didn't have to stay. She could have taken her money and left, finding her own way and her own adventures. It was unlikely that anyone could have stopped her; they were not really in a position to execute her since most of the other wizards were dead and since they all owed her a huge debt.

Knowledge is power

I enjoyed this and can't wait for a sequel (hint hint). My only real complaint is that I kept waiting for the main character to grow a spine. She's spent her entire life being victimized and marginalized, and then gets vast knowledge to supplement her limited magic strength. She consistently doesn't use it until backed into a corner or rendered helpless. A little preparedness on her part would have gone a long way and been much less frustrating. When she does cut loose she kicks butt though!

Great idea weighed down by frustrating main character!

The premise to the story is awesome! A librarian is suddenly infused with all of the information in a magical library. The author shows great promise, too! The main character was just horribly frustrating. Being given a wealth of information after a magical curse, she proceeds to whine her way through page after page until I was reduced to rooting for the evil characters to put her out of my misery! I gave it three stars because of the great idea and the skill of the author in developing the story and other characters.

From the Author
Writing this book was so much fun!  It began while homeschooling my son when he was in 3rd grade. (He is now 19 and a freshman in college!!)He was having such difficulites memorizing the tables, so we came up with funny pictures and rhymes. We would clap and sing and dance and act quite silly. It helped him to not only memorize, but to have fun while learning.I later refined the sketches and rhymes and brought them to an artist (Juan Jose Vasquez -with an accent marks over both e's).  He was great to work with. The funny thing is that we were living in the Dominican Republic at the time (we lived there for 11 years), so he spoke Spanish and I spoke only English.  We had so many meetings to get those sketches just right...and along the way I learned some Spanish....and he became almost fluent in English!!Moving on...I later worked as a 3rd grade teacher at New Horizons, a bilingual school in Santiago, DR. The latino students loved the songs ....the clapping...the pictues and the fun. I could go on, but I am out of space...   Needless to say...it was a blast!  I hope you have as much fun with it as I have had. - Joyful Learning Always!!  ... remember to purchase the sing-along songs CD and activity book, as all three work together for speedy results. ...and check out the new enhanced musical e-book at the itunes store for only $4.99 (this is a great value as it includes both the music and the picture-rhymes!) Fabulous book for teaching multiplication!

I just purchased an additional copy as a gift as this book helps children learn their multiplication by a multisensory approach: visual (beautiful illustrations that contain the equation with the art shapes depicting the numbers), auditory (reading and listening to rhymes to remind students of the product of the equation), and kinesthetic (as children can move, dance, and do hand motions as they sing/rap the rhymes). As a former elementary educator and administrator, I feel this is book is a wonderful asset to teachers as well as parents who want to help each child remember multiplication equations in a fun, effective way!

Kindle ebook does not have music

The kindle ebook does not have the music as advertised. Without the music, we haven't found much use for it. School House rock multiplication helped my kids much more than this did.

Talented Writing, but Vague Story

This was a somewhat entertaining read, but not a really good piece of literature. I thought the story had some potential in the beginning about Adrian fallling in love with Shadoe (Lindsay) in a second lifetime. I liked how she didn't know she was in love with him centuries prior, but the story lost some details from there. There were some very tedious chapters where I didn't understand how the background characters contributed to the plot because it focused too much on the kingdom and too little on the main characters. It could have talked more about Lindsay and Adrian's pasts and how their reconnection changed them, plus more on why the other people didn't like them together. It would have also been interesting if it talked about Lindsay going back and forth between lives, as she continued her work throughout the week and spent weekends in the kingdom (For instance, it could have mentioned her performance going down because of daydreaming, Adrian silently talking to her while she's working, lust, etc.) The ending was okay, but could have had a more interesting twist, such as Lindsay finding out it was all a dream or being told she's delusional or a vampire taking extreme revenge on her. But it pretty much lacks all of the details I mentioned. The book does contain a few explicit scenes, but it's not too in depth. Is it worth reading if you're a big Sylvia Day fan? Yes. Is it worth buying the second book? No.

Really liked it but it's not fair to write 2/3 of a trilogy and not finish it! You should declare that up front be fore someone buys the first one. Love a Sylvia Day story, though!
