Middle East Travels 1903

The author traveled through the Middle East in the 1890s-1900 era. Table of Contents: Introduction; To Palmyra; To Homs Hama; To Aleppo; To the Taurus; To Zeitun City; To Albistan; To Derendeh; To Hekim Khan; To Malatia Diarbekr; To Dara Dara; To Hajerlo; To Jezireh Eastern Kudistan; To Akra; To Mosul and the Tigris; To Kerkuk; To Suleiman; To Shernakh; To the End; Table of routes; Appendix; Index; 294-350?pages depending upon edition.

A really boring book! The author discusses his travels throughout the Middle East, but his observations are usually about the petty squabbles that he had with many village's poor "hotel" services, continuous complaints about his means of travel (whether by train or by horse), he had utter disdain for almost all of the common-folk that he meets, and just doesn't provide much if any depth about the political incidents that he encounters. Some of his observations:
* "The rest of the Christians of Syria, living in villages, are generally a poor race of people, resembling degraded Fellaheen, but of worse morals and physique; indeed they are not worth a description, and are interesting only to archaeologist in ritual and early Christian sectarian controversy>" (p. 30)
* "The Turk is not, truth to tell, very brilliant as a rule, though very apt in assuming Western cultivation....There are few Turks who would not lay down their lives for their country, there are fewer who would save it from internal decay...." (p. 65)
* "It is also a fact that the Armenians have an extra-ordinary habit of running into danger without possessing the courage to face it....I have good reason to know that these wretches actually schemed to murder American missionaries, hoping America would declare war on the supposition that the Turks were the criminals." (p. 78)

The only redeeming value to this book is the author's maps that denote the locations of hundreds of little-known communities that he recorded during his travels -- possibly for the benefit of British military-intervention interest. Sadly, otherwise, just a really boring book of little insightful analysis.

Buy a reprinted version from a different publisher

Reprinted by several different publishers, I bought this one because it was the least expensive. This was a mistake, since this print-on-demand book has print so light that it is almost impossible to read. Fortunately, I know someone who owns the very expensive original edition of 1901 and I read that instead. The photos in this reprint are barely visible. Moreover, it lacks a large fould-out map at the beginning of the work. If interested in this book, you could only do better by buying another publisher's version. A fascinating personal account by an unpleasant person scouting the area for the British Foreign Office for possible colonization. A first edition costs $600.

Issu d'une famille protestante, Carl Gustav Jung etudie au college de Bale et s'interesse de pres a l'Histoire et a la mythologie. Jung s'oppose effectivement a l'interpretation sexuelle du medecin viennois. Ainsi, la rupture se consomme en 1912. Jung entreprend ensuite de multiples voyages ethnographiques, au Kenya et en Inde notamment, qui lui permettent de mieux formaliser sa pensee. En 1921, il expose dans "Les types psychologiques" un inconscient defini par les pensees, les sensations, l'intuition et les sentiments et divise entre extraversion et introversion. Avec "L' energie psychique", il soumet l'hypothese de l'existence de deux formes d'inconscient, celui personnel et celui collectif, memoire de l'humanite vehiculant les grands archetypes mythologiques. Il devient le fondateur de la psychologie analytique.

A Great Psychic Explorer

Over four decades ago, when I was in my early twenties, I went through certain very intense experiences as a consequence of “an irruption of unconscious content into consciousness.” This experience made me intensely interested in the work of C. G. Jung. His work helped me understand and successfully live through, this experience. While it is common for scientists to dismiss Jung as superstitious, an accusation I do not completely disagree with, it is nonetheless true that people who have not experienced such an experience are not really qualified to criticize Jung. Though I have read a number of Jung’s books, I have read nothing by him in over thirty years, and I had never read this particular book. Jung apparently wrote this at about the time of his break with Freud, and he basically points out some of the reasons for this separation from Freud. This book, therefore, seems like a good starting point for anyone interested in learning more of Jung’s ideas. Although it would be better to read Freud’s “Three Contributions to the Theory of Sex” before reading Jung’s book, since Jung refers to it often and refutes some of its assertions.

Freud’s central hypothesis in the formation of a neurosis is that some traumatic event occurred in childhood which hindered the natural expression of the libido. The libido is the sexual analog of hunger. This hypothesis rests upon the notion of infantile sexuality, a notion which was denied at that time. Freud’s investigations disclosed not only but even precocious infantile sexuality, which often provoked the traumatic events which seemed to be the source of neurosis. Of course, critics accused the psychoanalysts of seeing things that were not really there. However, these critics made no studies of there own. Jung argued that it was more probable to suppose that the instinct for the preservation of the race was present in childhood than that it hits full force at puberty. In the present day it seems incredible that thinking adults could ever have denied infantile sexuality. Jung, however, disagreed with certain of Freud’s conclusions regarding infantile sexuality. Freud, for instance, asserted that the infant sucking its mother’s breast was a sexual act; Jung thought the pleasure attained by suckling was merely that of nutrition. However, since many bad habits of childhood, picking the nose, biting fingernails, etc, are linked with infantile suckling, and these habits are linked to adolescent masturbation, Freud concluded that suckling itself was a sexual act.

Jung did not believe that the traumatic event was the cause of the neurosis. When reading Freud, one gets the sense that every human endeavor boils down to sex. Civilization itself is dependent upon the shame and disgust that humans supposedly naturally feel towards sex causing a sublimation of the sexual drive into more productive channels. For Jung, libido is used in the more general sense of every passionate desire. However, he still maintains that morbid and exaggerated mental attitudes are a consequence of excessive libido; that is, the libido was somehow blocked in its proper flow so there is too little for some functions and too much for others. Psychoanalysis is the method by which the just proportions are restored.

Homosexuality, in those days, was explained as just another sexual dysfunction resulting from this improper blockage of libido. It is not clear that either Freud or Jung absolutely denied the possibility of congenital homosexuality, but they surely believed that it could often be explained by the blocked libido hypothesis. Jung describes a young man who had experienced homosexual desire when even younger, seemed to outgrow it as he got older, but then returned to homosexuality when the woman he wanted to marry rejected him. Nowadays we would more likely explain this as the young man tried to deny his homosexual nature by fixating on a woman who was sure to reject him. When she did, he accepted his intrinsic homosexuality. However, it seems likely that homosexuality is not congenital in all cases.

What most impressed me about Jung when I first read him forty hears ago was that for him the unconscious was not just a reservoir of repressed mental garbage, as Freud insisted, but was rather the actual source of consciousness. His studies of world mythologies and fairy tales demonstrated that all cultures independently derive the same themes. Moreover, these themes are repeated in dreams, as well as in the delusions of schizophrenia. Jung’s assertion that mankind’s unconscious is collective is widely ridiculed by “scientists,” though more from mere prejudicial rather than scientific reasons. There is no “scientific” reason for insisting that consciousness does not have intrinsic existence in some primordial form. Jung no doubt made mistakes, and often drifted often into regions that can almost certainly be dismissed as superstitious. However, he was a pioneer, exploring psychic regions where no scientist had gone before. Pioneers are permitted to make mistakes; that is a poor reason to dismiss their important discoveries.

Great History of Psychoanalysis

After reading this and Sigmund Freuds general introduction of psychoanalysis I have gained a pretty good understanding of the first understandings of the unconscious. I found Jungs book much easier to read compared to the books I have read in school. He does a wonderful job keeping to point and using language easily understood by someone much less read in psychology. I also really enjoyed his examples of cases to illustrate is points. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is going to school for psychology or just simply has an interest.

Read if you want to understand how Jung portrayed his break with Freud

Jung was explaining why he broke with Freud. He was definitely blaming Freud, although respectfully. For those of us who find Freud unreasonably and unattractively focused on a single idea, one more literary than scientific, Jung helps explain the attraction of Freudian theory and the excitement it created.

Good writing but limited perspective

Jen Sincero is a talented writer, and her edgy, irreverent style will be inspiring and motivational to many readers. If you've read other self help books then you probably won't find much that's new here. In fact, it's really the in-your-face tone and humor in her writing that makes this book worthwhile. As for her ideas, I personally found a lot to take issue with. First, she has a very polarized view of spiritual growth that divides our lives in to those that suck and those that are awesome. Maybe that works for young millennials just starting out in life, and if that's the audience she’s g oing for, then great, but most of us are somewhere on a continuum and her assertions that life is either this way or that way are simplistic to say the least. Sincero also uses a lot of highly critical, edgy language to describe people who are struggling or stuck - therefore not as awesome as she is - using words like "lame-o " "suck" "wuss" ...well, you get the idea. This may be mildly amusing the first time around, but it gets old fast and it's not exactly kind to those who may really be struggling. I have to confess that I question a writer who continually references her own life choices and personal career success as a model that the rest of us should follow. There is an exhibitionistic, narcissistic, "look at me", "look at how successful I am" dimension running through this book that is self-indulgent while lacking insight about what success could mean or look like for another person. Read this book for a quick shot of motivation if that's what you need, it's good for that, but look elsewhere for help in developing your own ideas and values about success and purpose. This is the Jen Sincero version and it may not apply to you.

Bravo!!!!

One of the best self help books I have ever come across. She is down to earth, funny and just gets to the point without using a bunch of flowery words. I feel like I was listening to a friend who was kicking me in ass and telling me to get on with it already! I have recommended this book to as many people as will listen to me go on and on about it. The only thing disappointing about it is that i didn't write it!!! I will read this one over and over! Get out your highlighters people, this s*** is brilliant!

Must Read for anyone dealing with self doubt

Before I get into this book, I have to say that while I do try to find time to read I rarely do so due to either a lack of time and/or I start one and forget to finish it. Basically, my reading choose is based on things that grab my attention or I can relate too. The title totally is that: an attention-getter.
As I read, I seriously couldn't put it down. It made me rethink a lot of things in my life and showed me the actions that I do that continue the situation and it also tells you how to replace those undesired outcomes. Needless to say, I had a lot of "ah ha" moments throughout the whole book. Her writing style is blunt and to the point, which leaves you a clear view of the purpose of this book (encouragement, self evaluation) This book is differently a must read for entrepreneurs or anyone dealing with a little self doubt. She will have you both laughing and rethinking your daily actions, I may or may not have even cried a little. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. I will be reading it again and this is one book that will not be given to the library.

A fun and thought-provoking read

Pop philosophy books can prove shallow, but this one's tie-in to the most serious urban drama series of the modern TV era forces its stable of authors toward hitting their marks,far more often than not. Not every essay meets academic standards and readability standards at the same time, but most do, and most evoke interesting thoughts as one reflects on The Wire. Both chapter 2 and the final chapter stand out as Ivy League-quality philosophy made understandable for the masses, while all but two or three other chapters near that quality. A few of the contributors were flippant, at times, but the serious scholars produced a compilation of work that helps introduce the reader to the relevance of philosophy to everyday 21st century culture. The cover's art may not sell a lot of books, and an actual photograph of any character from the series would've been a better choice, but don't judge this book by its' cover--the content has character, insight, and occasional humor--worth every penny.

Energy Experiments Really Work

Several months ago I heard an advertisement for this book while listening to Hay House Radio. My immediate response was, "I need that book!" Being the book junkie that I am though, it isn't (currently) in my budget to buy every book that sounds interesting to me. So I looked it up at the library. No copies. Drat!

Several weeks later, I spontaneously found myself browsing the Hay House site and came up on their blogger community. That, I now realize, was miracle #1. This community allows bloggers to receive copies of certain books for free in exchange for a review posted to the blogger's website. I signed up for the program and received the book just a few days later.

If you're into spirituality, the power of intention, quantum physics, or anything along those lines, you would love this book. It's absolutely perfect for the person who has done extended reading on the topics (me!) but can't manage to move beyond the feeling of being stuck. Sure you may come up on a little proof of the Universe working in your favor now and then, but it's soon forgotten and sucked into the void of feeling like you have no power over your life.

This book provided me with the necessary guidance I needed to truly know that my thoughts have power through 9 cut and dry exercises. The best part is, Ms. Pam Grout is writes in a language that is accessible, humorous and the very opposite of boring. The lessons are concise, to the point, and best of all - offer NO ROOM FOR QUESTIONING. At the end of each experiment you KNOW that God heard your plea.

When it all boils down to it, what these experiments aim to do is solidify our faith. You either believe or you don't. You can't be wishy washy and that's where most of us get stuck. You also can't send mixed signals... Like, "I really want to lose weight, but I also really want to have 10 pieces of chocolate cake today." You have to be honest with yourself about what you really want. That's the other place where we get stuck. We don't truly know what we want.

Through practicing the experiments in this book, you can begin to hone in on what it is you're truly asking for. As Grout states, begin with simple things first. Some things take longer than others. Don't expect to become a millionaire over night. Also, keep your eyes and intuition open. You have to recognize that your question and desires have been answered. Sometimes the answers don't come the way you wanted, or expected. Most important of all though, is don't waiver in your belief. Most spiritual traditions teach this critical element and now it's backed up by science. The observer creates and changes the observed. It's true.

Finally, just to prove to you that I'm not just writing this for naught, I will share two stories about thoughts/things I manifested while going through the experiments in this book. The first one comes in the form of a Needak rebounder (a mini trampoline). I've wanted one for several years, and have had a cheap one in the past, that only lasted me about two months. I had only been reading E-Squared for a couple of hours when suddenly the word "rebounder" popped into my mind. A few minutes later I was on Craigslist where, lo and behold, someone was selling two Needak rebounders for half of their original price. I have NEVER seen a Needak on Craigslist in all the years I've been looking for one.

I now own the rebounder. And, just to add to the delight of the story, it's worth noting that the person I bought it from - the complete and total Craigslist stranger - was also very much into miracles, Wayne Dyer and other things along this course. She even had the words, "I am entitled to miracles" written on her forearm. There's no denying God in this equation.

The second example is a little more subtle. I happened to drop my camera right on it's lens in the middle of my son's birthday party. I had experienced trouble with the lens before and tried everything I could to fix it. I couldn't. I was sure that this was it for my poor little camera, which I actually use for one of my jobs. Drat again! A little later in the day, one of the chapters was guiding me to manifest something specific, immediately my mind told me what I wanted, "a camera!"

A few minutes later I found myself on YouTube looking up instructions on how to fix my camera. Even though I had already given up on it. I pretty much thought I was about to take it apart and really ruin it. Instead I came up on a simple tutorial that said to slap the camera on your palm and gently guide the lens out. Can you believe this worked? Suddenly the lens that was absolutely stuck and would not move a millimeter was working just fine. I had a camera again. Sure, it wasn't a new camera, but I gave the Universe 48 hours to give me a camera and I had one within 30 minutes. I accepted it with gratitude.

Please don't think that the only thing you can manifest are material objects. These examples are important because we like to be able to see things physically. But we can also use this book to ask for guidance and to help manifest peace and love in our hearts - that's where the real power lies. Like I said before, it's really about cultivating and maintaining faith. So yeah, read this book. I got it for free, but if I knew then what I know now, I would have gladly paid for it. Thoughts become things

One afternoon while I was reading this book, I spoke out loud challenging the Universe to give me a blessing within 48 hours.
I might have been somewhat vague with my request but I said, My kids are having some financial issues and I want to have enough money to help them out.
I work as a server at night in a lottery room.
48 hours later...
I laid down to take a nap.
While I was sleeping I had a vivid dream.
I saw the face of my IPad.
Underneath the date, I saw the words, Greetings from the Universe.

I went to work that night just as I usually do and within a an hour an older woman came into gamble.
She begin to win outrageous amounts of money.
With each ticket she had to cash she tipped me.
20, 40, 50 and then a hundred. This went on non stop until finally I said to her,
Thank you so much but this is too much. I'm beginning to feel uncomfortable about taking all of this money from you and not doing much in return.
She began to cry.
She said, You will probably not understand this but it's ok. I was told to be here.
Well, I said. I want you to know that you just made a wish come true.
I am extremely grateful for your generosity.

Near closing time, as she was about to leave, she walked over to me and said, This ones for you too.
She took my hand, placed an un cashed ticket in it and closed my fingers around it.
She looked me straight in the eye and said, You have been blessed.
As she walked away, I looked down, pretty much in utter disbelief.
The ticket was in the amount of $287.00.
The following morning, I got the call I was expecting.
It was the kids, asking me if I was able to help them out.
And yes, I had exactly the amount they needed, down to the last dollar.

Thoughts do become things.
Choose the good ones.
Absolutely buy this book.

I no longer have to challenge the Universe.
I got my proof.
And my life has never been the same.

Amazed and in shock

Was I skeptical? Oh yeah. Now? Amazed and in shock.

First experiment: Asked for the attention of a woman. I'm an introvert and I live in New York City. I've been going to the same Starbucks for years and I've never spoken to anyone. On the 2nd day of the 1st experiment, I end up conversing with a beautiful woman with an awesome personality. And of course, she wasn't from here. She was from the West Coast.

Second Experiment: It was to determine how we live according to our limited perception. So the experimenter is called upon to ask for something outside of our comfort zone. I asked to find a sky-blue car, thinking they weren't so rare. I found three. I thought "Too easy. Let me find an orange one." Again, I live in New York City, the capital of the image-based world. Who the hell in their right mind would own an orange car here? That's when I discovered something about New York City yellow taxis that left me jaw-dropped after reading this book. They're all actually orange. Contrast against the car on the right. If you live in New York City, feel free to try and debunk what I just said.

The Vol 2 is mostly the English translation of the Brhaddevata. Even though the English text is legible, the Sanskrit texts included in the notes are very difficult to read.
