A Fantastic Read Out Loud & Laugh Out Loud Short Story

I absolutely loved this book. Geared toward middle school kids, I expected a few chuckles, but was delighted to find that perfect blend of humor and wit that transcends age and had me laughing out loud. Told in the first person by an uber-ego Superhero whose primary interest seems to be celebrity endorsement deals, the reader has a front row seat to a most unusual rescue of a little enemy offspring known only by its barcode MI-Z 450-7521.

Drawing characters from the Joshua Dread middle school series, A Mutant Named Mizzie stands on its own for those who have not read Joshua Dread while giving those readers who have read Joshua Dread a unique perspective into the mind of Captain Justice. Importantly, the author uses humor and creativity not only to entertain but to highlight important character building issues. It was a fast read - I found myself wishing I had had this story available for one of our family vacations so we could read it aloud in the car. I would tag this as appealing most to ages 9-15 and anyone who likes to read out loud to others.

Bravo to Random House for releasing an affordable short story on an e-book. This seems to be a great way for parents, teachers, and librarians of school-age kids to find high quality reading from new authors like Lee Bacon.

While not a terrific story to stand on its own, this short story gives Captain Justice an added dimension that he doesn't have in the Joshua Dread novel. Read that one first, then get this as filler while we wait for Bacon to finish the next Dread story (Hint Hint, Mr. Bacon!).

The world is a cruel place, and in the winter of 1964 -5 a minor tragedy occurs in New York City. A young, single, teen-mother dies giving birth to an unwanted little girl, but the circumstances are not quite normal.

This is a question that has haunted mankind ever since he started walking upright. To ex-British soldier and clergyman Gerald Davidson, newly appointed vicar of the Anglican Parish of St Martha’s in Lower Chalfont, Buckinghamshire, his view was that of his denomination, and not really open for negotiation.

As he settled into his parish in 1960, he was firmly of the opinion that if the people wouldn’t come to the church, he would go to them. He took the time and trouble to visit many of the local people who rarely attended church. One of these was an elderly and rather cantankerous gentleman by the name of William Knox. The first visit was hardly a roaring success, but over the next five years the pair built up a firm friendship. After his experience in the trenches of France and by virtue of what he perceives to have been a great mistake, William is not convinced there is a God. This did not prevent their friendship from growing. Both men had military service in common. For William had seen service in both World Wars and Gerald as an infantry officer in Korea.

On the subject of life after death, however, the pair never agreed. William felt cheated in this life, in as much as he never felt fulfilled and complete. He had born the fact that he had lived his life, through two world wars, in the firm knowledge that he had been born into the body of the wrong gender.

He stated that he rather fancied another chance, to be reincarnated in the correct gender, with the full knowledge of his previous existence. William bet the vicar that if he could, he’d return and prove that it was possible.

The bet? A pint of beer.

Gerald accepted the bet with good humour, as he disagreed that reincarnation could be a realistic possibility, but when the old man died, he thought the argument had died with him.

In 2008, the now retired Gerald opens his front door to an attractive American woman who acts as if she knows him. After proving beyond all reasonable doubt that Mrs Kerry-Anne Phillips had lived a life as William Knox, she says to the stunned retired vicar, “I honestly don’t know, but now the mistake has been rectified. Gerald, you owe me a pint.”

Kerry begins to tell William’s story to a stunned Gerald. She has to return to America before getting very far. Before leaving, she locates a package in William’s old home and hands it over to Gerald. After she leaves, he opens it and discovers that the package contains William’s old journals. He begins to read and is so taken with the story, he decides to share them.

This book covers the first few journals up to 1917.

Great story

Tanya you have done it again. The concept of the story explores a very interesting subject, reincarnation. By telling it from the memoirs you have created a very convenient way of telling Will's story. You had me riveted to it & I could not put it down.
I really hope that Book 2 will be out shortly as I am a bit like Gerald & want to start reading the next pages of the memoirs.

I've just finished reading thia new selection and enjoyed it immensely!What an ambitions program!! Well-researched scenes from the 1st WW in England, Belgium and France, carefully drawn portraits of the Vicar, and of William Knox, insightful comments on American culture vs. British culture of the 1915's to the 1920's, gently touching on the culture of the 1960's and her wonderful quality of describing the deep humanity of the "enemy" in the character of Bruno. I appreciate her putting together an wholistic view of William Knox, from childhood and into this entity's subsequent incarnation. And how the multiple voices of the vicar, William himself, his journals and Kerry-Anne strongly carry the narrative. A very complex tour de force. Thanks for a wonderful story!--

A Solid Holmes Pastiche

Somewhere in between the length of a short story/novella, this proved to be an altogether enjoyable pastiche, where I was pleasantly surprised to find a plotted mystery along with well done characterizations and deductions nearly worthy of the originals. Beginning in the tradition of 'The Musgrave Ritual' and 'The Gloria Scott', Holmes recounts to the doctor one of his first cases, which also happens to be one of his foremost failures. It proves a very atmospheric and enjoyable start - Holmes' storytelling is surprisingly enthralling - yet what appeared to be an unsuccessful case of old segues into a new problem for the detective to unravel.

I have to say, it was not only the humour laced throughout that kept my attention, but the case was actually an intriguing one, and it was nice to see Watson attempting deduction. His efforts, by the by, were admirable. So what I downloaded for a bit of late night Holmes reading actually turned out to be a very worthwhile pastiche. Undoubtedly the best I've yet to read for a .99 cent download.

Hard to put down

I'm not a Sherlock Holmes fan but I read this book and couldn't put it down. It was well-researched and well-written. I couldn't figure out the whodunit and was pleased with the way the author wrapped it all up. Well done! I was upset to have to take a break from finishing it due to life interruptions and was glad when I got to finish it.

A very enjoyable read.

This story stayed very close to the Canon and its timeline. The story plot read like riding a wave starting slow but picking up speed and carrying the reader high above the action and then gently depositing the reader to the end. I would definitely recommend this book.

The Children’s Educational Quiz Book” you’ll find basic questions about Dr. Seuss’ books. With every correct answer you get biographical information about Dr. Seuss, including where he was educated, when he began to write children’s books and the many acknowledgments and awards he received for his work.

Even if you are a grownup, you’ll love answering the questions and learning more about this wonderful, creative genius. Well worth the time and money!

Dr. Seuss is the best storyteller if all time. Quiz was easy but had some really great info. Worth borrowing with Prime.

After a week.of Dr Seuss books this equiz will be fun teaching tool. I look forward to other books in this series.
