I Don't Know What I Read

I don't even know how to begin. I absolutely hated this... book? I don't even know if I should call it a book. Let's just start with that fact that I'm confused. That's my biggest takeaway from this. I'm just confused. This thing is really short, and I think it's actually just the beginning of a book that was made separate so people would download it for free and then hopefully buy the entire book? I'm not sure though because that's not really explained well anywhere, so I have no idea what's actually up with that.

At any rate, nothing about this makes me want to read the rest of the book because I had no idea what was even happening in this. Nothing in the story made sense to me, and I was just at a complete loss as to what was happening the entire time. I don't know what the story is supposed to be about. The synopsis tells you more than I could after having read it, and I don't even think I got the majority of that out of what I read. I guess I'll trust that the synopsis is what the story's supposed to be, but I just don't know.

Aside from the story not really making sense, the writing itself was pretty bad as well. The wording of a good deal of it was just awkward and hard to read. A lot of times I would have to read a sentence multiple times to actually get what was trying to be said. It's possible that that's what made the story so confusing to me I suppose. Maybe if the writing wasn't so odd I would have understood it more. I don't know.

I feel like this review is just me saying things like "I don't know" or "I'm confused" or other variations over and over, but that is genuinely my only takeaway from this. I don't even know what I read.

Although only recently released, this book is not one of my most recent writings. I'm still working on getting my back catalog on Amazon and that takes time, especially since I'm also writing new work. A Time to Live is actually the second novel I ever wrote with the intent of publishing and the first in the contemporary romance genre (the very first novel I wrote with the goal of publishing was the historical romance By Any Other Name). So readers of his novel are going to see differences in writing style and story structure. In each of my books, I am now putting a list of the novels I have written. They are in order of writing, not release dates. If you're curious about which came first, the chicken or the egg, check that list.
That being said, I still like this story and enjoy the characters. Michael especially has a very special place in my heart because his skills and talents are unlike any other hero I've ever written. I hope you enjoy reading A Time to Live and I want to thank all of my readers for making my venture into ebooks and Amazon a successful one.

Nikki frowned in confusion, but allowed him to put the jacket on her. She looked up at the wall of the ravine then abruptly slumped against him, her hand clutching his shirt. "Michael," she whispered in a tiny voice. "I was so worried. I thought they were shooting at you." Her entire body began to quiver.

He held her as tightly as he dared, his heart warming with a sensation he did not care to examine too closely. "It's all right, sweetheart. I'm here and I'm going to take you home."

She nodded. Carefully, he lifted her into his arms.

Nikki bit back a soft cry of pain, then abruptly sagged, unconscious.

Michael's heart lurched. "Nikki," he called, his voice strained. "Wake up! You've got to stay awake."

She didn't move.

"No, Nikki, don't do this to me." His arms tightened around her.

Michael heard the sound of another four wheel drive churning along the edge of the ravine. His stomach coiled. Were Taylor and his goons returning to finish what they started? Two sets of headlights approached and Michael scowled. Usually they all piled into Taylor's Jeep.

The vehicles stopped at the edge of the ravine. People carrying flashlights emerged. "Miss Matthews?" A voice boomed.

Michael's scowl deepened, that didn't sound like Taylor.

"Sheriff," another voice said. "Over here, I found shell casings."

Fear blazed a mindless path through Michael's body and his heart slammed against his ribs. How did the sheriff know to look for Nikki? Michael dismissed the thought as he stared down at the unconscious, injured woman in his arms. If they found him like this it would start all over again. He would be blamed for something he had not done.

Michael searched the dark forest around him. He could leave Nikki here and fade into the woods. As long as they didn't see him, they couldn't blame him for this. But how could he return her to the freezing snow? It was dark and the storm grew worse. What if the sheriff didn't find Nikki in time and she died? Michael would never be able to live with himself.

His jaw was so tight it ached, but Michael took a deep breath. "Down here, sheriff!"

Flashlights spun toward him, shining in his face, blinding him.

"Freeze, Roumare! Put Miss Matthews down."

Michael winced as the sheriff and his deputies leveled their guns at him. "I can't, sheriff, she's too cold. If I put her back in the snow the hypothermia will kill her."

"I said put her down!"

"John," Doc Blackthorn's voice rang out. "Michael is right."

Michael breathed a sigh of relief, he hadn't realized Doc was there. The man was one of his few friends on Shadow Mountain.

"Doc," the sheriff snapped. " I've got to follow procedure here."

"Listen," Michael barked. "Nikki is injured and far too cold. The longer we stand here the worse it will get. About one hundred feet to your left the ravine levels out."

The sheriff snapped a curse. "Start walking, Roumare, but do anything stupid and you're a dead man."

Michael gritted his teeth, but moved toward the opening of the ravine. Two deputies shadowed him along the edge, while the sheriff, Doc, and the others climbed into their vehicles and drove to the end. Moments later, Doc threw open the back of his customized Suburban and pulled out a stretcher. He rushed to Michael. "Is anything broken?"

"Not that I could find," Michael said and quickly related Nikki's injuries. He eased her onto the stretcher. The sheriff and one of his deputies grabbed Michael's arms and twisted them behind his back. Cold, hard handcuffs clamped around his wrists.

"You are under arrest for the attempted murder of Nicole Matthews. You have the right to remain silent...."

Michael squeezed his eyes shut as the sheriff's voice droned in his ears. Not again, his thoughts screamed. I didn't do anything. He had counted on a woman telling the truth once before and had known only betrayal. The sheriff and the legal system would push Nikki to the breaking point and she would believe the lies. The horror would happen all over again.

Slowly, Michael lifted his head and stared at Nikki's blood spattered face. Only one thing truly mattered. "Please let her be all right," he whispered.

Brilliant engaging story

This was a wonderful story. The cast of characters diverse and interesting. I loved that Nikki was selling up and moving to the mountains to 'die'. Along the way she meets her neighbour Michael. She tries to maintain a distance because she doesn't want to cause any pain for people when she is 'gone'.

She unknowingly stumbles into a town fraught with racism and a serial killer. Is the serial killer her neighbour? Or is it some other yahoos that made a negative impression?

Michael is a half breed Arapaho Indian and French. He is tied to the land and is in tune with nature. He was a gem of a character. This story was believable and had all the elements to make it a great read; romance, suspense, serial killer, stupid ass men that should get the 'Darwin Award' and an extremely biased Sheriff!

I had to Finnish this till the end it was that engaging. I do have to admit that the killer is not too difficult to figure out. The 'whys' were really interesting to read. Nikki doesn't take any crap and can hold her own! Real kick ass girl!

Do yourself a favour and download this immediately, you won't be disappointed!

I want to give this more than five stars! It was that good!! Totally loved the story line and how well the story flowed. The characters are so lovable and down to earth. You just can't put this down until you are finished.

Nikki takes off to Colorado to die alone. She was given only three to four months left to live. The chemo treatments and all the tests were just to much for her to handle anymore.Not to mention the doctor who was treating her was her her lover.Nikki found out he was sleeping with another woman and she just wanted to get away and die in peace.She figured it was better this way. No one to leave behind grieving for her.No more tests, no more problems.What she didn't expect, was to meet up a with a ruggedly handsome man who could make her weak in the knees and infuriate her at the same time.

Michael,he has fallen for the new girl in town but it seems trouble follows him where ever he goes. The towns people don't like him and try to drive him out of town every time he sets foot in its limits. Michael can't help but try to make friends with Nikki.After all she is his new neighbor now.
There is just something about her he can't put his finger on.It's like she's hiding something and hold back at the same time. But once they both start to fall in love things really start to get crazy. Michael gets charged with another murder that happens in town.It seems like he keeps getting framed for these murders but the charges don't stick. Something strange is going on and it's going to take over his life. Worse of all now Nikki is at risk as the next target.

Like I said,this is an amazing story and you want to put it down!

Serial killer thriller with touching romance

A story of prejudice, illness, serial killings, trust and falling in
love when the odds are against it. Nikkei wants to die alone
(lung cancer) on her own terms & moves to Shadow Mountain
where she meets Michael, who is half Native American. He is
the victim of prejudice & accused of being the serial killer. They
fall in love and have to get past their own past and trust
issues, while figuring out who is the real killer with a surprise
twist. Touching, one small sex scene, good suspense, worth
reading.

Way better than I expected

I won a hardback copy of this in a drawing (it came signed by the author, a treat)and was pleasantly surprised by how good the book is. It's no. 2 in the series, and I generally think series ought to be read in order, but this was a good stand-alone. The explanations of the previous books' activities were skillfully woven into the current plot. The characters are likeable, the story compelling, and there was a nice touch of possible romance.

I had some trepidation in starting the book because one of the back-of-the-book blurbs referred to the book as being squeeky clean, which sometimes is a code to me for "boring" or "proselytizing". But, I decided what the heck, give it a try.

I got caught up in the relationships between India, her '60s liberal parents, her perfect sister, her everything-Irish landlady and the detective on the case. She's kind of sweet on the detective, but he used to date her sister, so that causes some angst for India. The book has a satisfying conclusion and leaves the door open for more.

I've put the first in the series, "Maid of Murder" on my wish list. And I'm going to have to check out Amanda Flower's Appleseed Creek series as well.

The ladies in our book club really enjoyed this book. It kept me hanging on who the killer was until the end which is unusual since I read so many mysteries.

About the Author
Philip K. Dick (1928-1982) was an American science-fiction novelist, short-story writer and essayist. A contemporary of Ursula K. Le Guin, Dick's first short story, "Beyond Lies the Wub," was published shortly after his high-school graduation. Many of Dick's works drew upon his personal experiences with drug abuse, addressing topics such as paranoia and schizophrenia, transcendental experiences and alternate reality, and the childhood death of his twin sister is reflected through the recurring theme of the "phantom twin" in many of his novels. Despite ongoing financial troubles and issues with the IRS, Dick had a prolific writing career, winning both the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award multiple times. Some of his most famous novels and stories--A Scanner Darkly, "The Minority Report," "Paycheck," and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (adapted into the film Blade Runner)--have been adapted for film. Dick died in 1982.

Excellent Anthology of Early Philip K. Dick

This is a good anthology of Philip K. Dick's early short fiction. A number of stories ("The Defenders," "The Gun," "Mr. Spaceship") begin to explore the theme of machines replacing-- or becoming indistiguishable from-- humans, which Dick later used in his great novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" (later made into the brilliant film "Bladerunner"). The excellent novelette "Second Variety" was also made into a movie, albeit not a very good one, "Screamers." "Second Variety" continues to explore the machines as humans theme, and also adds in the difficulty of distinguishing reality from illusion, which became a major recurrent theme in Dick's later novels. This collection also includes the brilliant short story "The Skull," one of the best science fiction stories to grapple with the theme of religious truth.

Halcyon does their usual good job here-- the Kindle book has a linked table of contents and few to no typos.

If you already like PKD, you will like this collection of short stories. For a sci-fi newbie, this may not be a good place to start since his stories may feel dated. It' s a good collection and a great value on kindle.

This is hardly "The Best of Philip K. Dick"- this is just a collection of those of his stories available in the public domain. They are still good stories, and worth a couple bucks- but you can get them free, individually, elsewhere.

About the Author
I write. I cook. I love my dogs. I live in a log home built with reclaimed logs - they were hewn by hand over 100 years ago and are rich with adz marks and random pegs and notches. Not as sad as I thought it would be

I have a cat, but was strangely drawn to this book about dogs, people who love them, and people who lose them (through death). It took me a while to realize the short stories were about all the dogs one family loved, versus all the dogs several families loved. (I'm kind of slow that way.)
I could picture the husband and wife walking their dog(s) around the pond; and then three, four, 14 years later, they remembered walking their dog around the pond and how sad yet glad they were for the memories.
Very well written, I will look out for other books by this author (fiction or nonfiction).
